Default Google maps mobile and voice prompts - 02-14-2008, 09:05 AM

Can anyone make an educated guess as to when or if Google maps will add turn by turn voice prompts to their software? Several other free and not free GPS applications have voice prompts. Is there any reason to think that Google will not ever add voice prompts?

Google will add this feature once they figure out a way to generate revenue from it.

unfortunately penguin is almost certainly correct. being a business google provides the free tools to get you hooked and to get ad $$. once they start getting into GPS voice prompts they might start charging for it

Have you tried:

- Mapquest free versions posted here (search on Mapquest)
- AmazeGPS (free)
- Nav4All (free)

All with voice turn-by-turn.

Like Redflea suggested check out the free MapQuest Navigator. I started using it and it works fine for me. Was using TeleNav but didn't use it enough to justify the $10 monthly payment. TeleNav does have a nicer interface, but the thought of being able to purchase 10 Dollar-Menu items in a month with my savings makes me feel better...

radio adverts between directions. Think of how much money they could make off that! And they could even target them to your location. Oh man, just think "Press M if you want to go to Jimmy's Steak House, its only 2 miles away!"

I'd patent that if i had the time and money.

I hate advertisements as well. BUT, it does fund a lot of "free" products for our consumption.

It's not hype. Some people find it useful. Some don't. If you don't get it then don't use it. At least there are options out there for people with different wants/needs.

I personally don't get the "hype" over free but feature-poor GPS apps.

YMMV, as usual.

Default Voice prompts - 04-13-2008, 12:13 PM

Being new to the wonderful world of blackberry i recently received my 8110 pearl and was wondering how do you download say the likes of google maps with voice prompts. Or any other (free) sat nav software for that matter. yeah i like the blackberry maps but what about voice prompts, just dont fancy looking at the phone every 5 minutes and risking the local police pulling me over and earning bonus points on my license.

Andy

I'm glad that I am not the only one with that prompt.
