Default AT&T Navigator is TN 5.5 rebranded - Stories Here - 04-02-2008, 02:11 PM

So, i just went to the Telenav download site to see if they released 5.5 yet, and i get prompted to download what they are calling 1.5.1 of AT&T Navigator. But the file is called telenav55.jad. Anyone download this yet? is this the update, or a downgrade from 5.1.1.15?

Sprint Nav is also TeleNav. seems that AT&T might have gone with the same concept of rebranding. This step is usually followed by Direct billing of said branded feature.

I'm already signed up through AT&T for Telenav. The link for download from your phone is http://ota.telenav/att/tnn

It asked me to allow the apllication to act as an SMS server?!!!!
Wtf is up with that? *EDIT: It has some new features that use SMS

Just found this article announcing a rebranding

Smile A lot of changes here... - 04-02-2008, 02:44 PM

So this is the Telenav 5.5 update branded as AT&T Navigator

They've changed the menus around and added a bunch of new features. It appears they have removed the Compas feature.

The Main menu now reads:

-Drive To
-Search
-Maps & Traffic
-Share & More

The Drive To menu:
-My Favorites (which now displays the folders that you can create for categories on the Telenav webportal along with some new icons)
-Recent Places (nothing new here)
-Address (if your press the Menu button, you get the option to Speak in Address)
-Intersection (new feature, also ability to Speak in Intersection)
-City (ability to Speak in City)
-Business (ability to Speak in Search)
-Airports (ability to Speak in Airport)
-Contact (from your address book)

The Search menu:
(not much changed, now can Speak in Search from menu)

Maps and Traffic:
-takes you to a map of your current location
-Options from menu (Hide Traffic, Commute Alert, Share Location, Curson Address, Get New Map)
-Zoom buttons changed to Q(+) and P(-)

Share & More menu:
- Share Address (uses SMS i presume)
- My Stuff (My Favorites, Recent Places, Commute Alerts, Sent Addresses)
- Weather (gives you the weather of your current GPS location)
- Record Location
- Refer a Friend
- Product Tour
- Preferences (you can now set the audio to suspend during a phone call, you can purchase additional voices as well, new navigation options)
- About

Thats most of it! There are a few little things here and there I left out, but that should cover most of the changes.

I'm already subscribed directly through Telenav. Does this version require subscription via AT&T or can you still use the Telenav ID and password?

Dunno, try it out and let us know! It does not install over the previous version so it should not mess up your current application install.

Update:

After using this to get home from work today i noticed a few bugs

1) Backlight doesn't stay on (even though it is configured to)
2) 3D moving maps switches to 2D during turns
3) Reroute calculation seems to lag a bit more than it used too
4) Commute alert arrived an hour late

Telenav won't be supporting this version. Quote from their forum moderator in response to my complaint:

"While it is based off our technology, AT&T Navigator is a separate product and support is provided by AT&T. If you are encountering any issues with AT&T Navigator, call AT&T at 800-331-0500."

Complete BS. Its thier product with AT&T branding. The feedback "feature" in the software sends the message to [email address] So who really is supporting this?

I just upgraded to an 8310 Monday and got Telenav version 5.1. I just now went to the same OTA site I used Monday and downloaded the ATT version so I now have both versions of Telenav on my BB. I will use both tomorrow and post my impressions over the weekend.

Maybe you need OS 4.5 for this featue since that version has Voice Notes.

You won't pay twice. You pay for access to the system. The applications just act as portals, as far as I can tell.

As for needing OS 4.5 for the voice commands to work: they work for me without OS 4.5. It records an .amr file and transmits it to their Nuance servers which translate it to text and then pass that along to the search. You can also send them voice feedback that way.

I used the same link on Thursday that I used on Tuesday to download the program and it downloaded the ATT version without removing Telenav 5.1 so I DON'T THINK SO. I used the same pin number to log in to both versions. As I am new to Telenav,(and to the 8310) I am still comparing the two programs. Once I am done doing that, I will probably remove Telenav to free up memory.

First impressions, Att Navigator has more features but it also has some bugs (but so does the 8310) than 5.1. As I use it more over the next couple of days, I will get more specific.

Works good here! No issues, I like the new interface.

I wonder if you have removed Voice Activated Dialing in any OS cod file removals, if this the voice feature will be disabled in TN?

along with a verbal announcment - I am very impressed so far and I like the new interface alot. I did have an account issue which prevented my HH from seeing the GPS. Cust Service fixed that. I will report more but so far its great.

It was my only app that didn't see the GPS. Have them check your account and make sure your current model BB is registered.

3 D Moving Maps becomes Turn Icons when cell coverage drops and you get a voice prompt telling you. Also the total distance changes to time to destination and alternates. Very slick.

Is anyone seeing crazy routing? I'm seeing wild routes taking me all over town. Really crazy routes with numerous turns where I can use a much more direct route. The old Telenav version was just fine. This ATT version is acting nuts. I've deleted and re loaded twice. Still the same. I reloaded the old Telenav version and it fine. Example: My house to my kids high school. Att version 11.5 miles. Telenav version 7.1 miles.

I have had similiar experiences with the AT&T version. It tells me to go past a turn, then do a U-turn and turn at the intersection where i could have turned.

well, as a service to everyone else with AT&T on this site who uses Telenav, I spent 2 hours on the phone tonight with AT&T, AT&T and Telenav, Telenav, and then back to AT&T and Telenav. What did I accomplish?

I had Telenav notate the issues i have previously mentioned to be escalated to their "engineering" group. I will let everyone know when/if i get a response/resolution from them. My gut tells me that they will be reluctant to admit that they are providing AT&T (a huge customer) with defective software. As this has been their attitude thus far.

Anyone else with a couple extra hours on their hands should call AT&T to complain as well. 800-331-0500. Maybe then they will acknowledge it.

Sure are Route fastest Avoid Nothing. I didn't want to throw that stuff into the mix. I tried it again today and found it weird 50% of the time. It adds several miles into the route when it goes crazy.

It seems like now you have to have a route to view #D moving maps. With 5.1, there was an option for this under tools, without having to enter a route. Too bad.

I think it checks the GPS to see if it can access it. Try it at different times as see if you see a difference.

I "think" from what Telenav told me, that anyone who had signed up for Telenav before it was rebranded as At&T Navigator will be able to use the Telenav versions going forward and recieve support for them. So, you may want to wait for Telenav to officially release 5.5 at which time they will support it fully.

Chief engineer called me late today but i missed the call. I emailed the two videos of the crazy routing and wrote an extensive explanation. I'll return her call tomorrow. Not one crazy route since I sent the email to them. Maybe they fixed it on their end.

Downloaded it, and it worked but is is way too buggy. Locks up, gets stuck, very slow and clunky.

I'll wait until TN comes out with their own updated version, maybe even 6.0
