Are any of these programs usable with the Alltel 8330, or am I limited to only using the Telenav software that came with my BB? I have heard that Alltel has locked down the GPS in a similar manner to Verizon, but I don't know that for sure yet.

I've used Telenav and it seems to work fairly well, but I'm not really interested in paying $10 a month for something that I only use infrequently.

Hello

Just bought my first blackberry last week. Love it!

I live in city and know my way round well. I wouldnt be worthwhile to pay Ł5 a month for a sat nav service on my BB, can anyone recommend a free service. Somthing that is easy to use by entering postcodes (zip codes) and has a clear screen and voice prompting.

Let me know

Great forum btw....

Cheers

In Germany T-Mobile offers the software "NaviGate". I never used ist, but the download is free under "navigate.t-mobile.de". AFAIK a data plan is mandatory and you have to pay for every routing query.

BTW: Thank you for the work on the list. Its very helpful.

great thanks jsanders,

do you have any experience with the nav4all?
a free talking turn by turn app is hard to believe, but i will def give it a try!
any reviews on this program will be appreciated!

oh boy im excited

also, i wonder if it would be possible to interface with this beastly old GPS receiver i have? its a "Earthmate Hyperformance GPS receiver" from DeLorme thats about 8 years old runs on4AAA batteries and has a serial port connection hahaha. a freedom GPS would prolly be a better choice....

Nav4all works great on my 8830. I removed Amaze and Google because of the options available. Thanks for the post about Nav4all.

I have a VZW 8330 (Curve) and don't want to use VZNavigator (it stinks). I am looking to purchase a dedicated GPS unit that I can also use with my phone (I have an unlimited data plan) to get traffic updates, etc. I bought the TomTom Go 720, but of course VZW won't allow data access with it because there's no OBEX transfer allowed on the bluetooth. Anyone know of a unit I can use or a way to get OBEX to work on the phone?

Hi. New to the site but finding it extremely useful.

Where would the new mobile mapquest fit in? It says it can send all the maps to your phone for storage. Has anyone played around with it yet? Is it possible to send the maps or download the maps via wifi and use this without a data plan?

Thanks.

I saw the news release for Mapquest mobile off pinstackers. I would love to try it but unfortunately it is not available for my phone just yet. It is in beta stage. Pulled off their site: MapQuest 4 Mobile Beta is available for Sprint on the BlackBerry 8830 and AT&T on the BlackBerry 8800, 8820, and 8310. Support for additional handsets is coming soon!

If anyone with one of the supported phones cares to play around and let us know how it is, I know I would greatly appreciate it.

www dot mapquest dot com/mq4m or www dot mq4m dot com from your BB. (sorry can't post links, requires 10 posts)

I can't find where it says it will download and store on the phone.

All I found was this:

Interactive Maps for Mobile Screens - MapQuest 4 Mobile uses smaller map images for mobile screens. This allows you to pan and zoom without waiting for long downloads.

Default Time problem with GPSed - 09-23-2008, 08:39 AM

I've found what I think is a weird time problem with the GPSed app. I like to go for a stroll at lunchtime, walk 1/2hr out and 1/2hr back. Time got away from me yesterday and I checked with GPSed and it said I had only been out for 24mins, it seemed like longer. I monitored how time progressed on the way back. My walk back, walking faster this time, took 28mins, GPSed stated 20mins. Has anyone else seen this?

Cacheberry can be used to view GPX files from geocaching.com or if you convert your log files to GPX format. I just downloaded it so I can't tell you how well it works. cacheberry.com

How come there are no aGPS weather applications on BlackBerry? I really would like a solid weather applications that gives you radar etc. based on your location determined by the GPS. Live Search determines the weather based on your GPS location, but no radar. I used to have My-Cast on my flip phone, which was an actual application running on your phone, which was a terrific application. I know about the web-based weather sites for mobile, like TWC and AccuWeather but I am looking for an actual application to put on my Bold. Hopefully someone can develop one!

This is just what i needed but i could do with some guidance.

i downloaded nav4all and was not happy with the user interface so i deleted it.

i then dowloaded googlemaps and at first seemed happy with this however when i plugged in a post code [zip] and then set off driving there was no audible guidance and the map didn't move with me. The little symbol moved along the map on the page but i had to manually scroll the page which is not good when driving.

Does anyone have any advice for this as verbal commands and a page which refreshes and gives turn symbols would be good? Does that come for free in the UK?

Google maps doesn't provide voice commands. It will follow you -- press '0' to centre the map on your GPS location. But if you deviate from the route it recommends it won't recalculate. Google maps is more for planning a route than guiding you through it. I use it when I'm the passenger, navigating for the driver.

I use nav4all, amazegps and, as of yesterday, telmap, all of which provide voice commands, cover the UK and are, for now, free.

I find amazegps almost unusably slow, which is a shame, because I find it's map guidance and voice prompts to be quite nice. It won't run in the background. It is, and will remain, free. Turn symbols and 2d/3d map

I agree with you that nav4all has a wonky unser interface. It took me ages to figure out what all the hundreds of menu items did -- basically, the only ones you need are "Navigate to...." and "Search Address". The menu key puts that application into the background and clicking the trackball brings up the menu. It doesn't give you a map while you're driving, turn symbols only. It will run in the background and continue giving voice instructions, so you could bring up google maps at the same time. Free until 2010.

I've only just got hold of telmap. You need to register to join the beta program (see link posted recently) for a free download. It looks really good, what I've seen of it so far. It also runs in the background. Turn symbols, 2d/3d map and walking directions.

BlackStar is a free gps app that will manage waypoints and provide bearing arrow to the destination. It is tailored towards geocaching, but it is not limited to that purpose. You can use it to manage waypoints for any number of activities: hiking, hunting, flying, boating.

url for OTA install is tinyurl.com/gpsnav
