Absolutely terrific guide... makes the exploration process much easier.

Some notes..
1) Mapquest says it's available from $4.17/mo. I'm wondering if they've changed their pricing system from a 1x fee to a subscription based product.
2) MobileTracker seems to fit in the "tracker" category and not the routing one.
3) CoPilot Live... for some reason I couldn't see where to download. If anyone has a direct URL, pls post.

I see that also... not a bad idea if you don't have to make a year's commitment. Otherwise after 12 months = $50.04

which one of the free apps is the best one to use? i read some treads but they're pretty old.

GoogleMaps, Nav4All and AmazeGPS. From there it really is a personal preference decision.

I personally keep at least three on my device at all times; TeleNav (because it is just the best, and it works!), Google Maps, and WinLiveSearch (has great search capability, sometimes finds stuff that Google won't).

With reasonably accuracy if you have a Verizon 8830 with disabled GPS? I am assuming some work through cell tower triangulation, much like the LORAN of yesterday did, and they were much more accurate than any program -Non VZ Navigator, that I can run on my phone to establish initial position or initiate a search. It's amazing that Verizon will provide incentives for emergency workers to use their network with the best coverage but charge to use a built in feature of a phone the person owns that could save a life. Crap… sorry about the Verizon triad I started to delete it but felt that the moderator will if it is that inappropriate.

But very seriously, is there a good real time navigation program i can use on my 8830 that doesn't have fees associated with it?

Yes, please read the initial post. There are many that don't require either internet, a monthly subscription, or initial purchase.

Please don't bring the VZW "disabled my GPS" moan into this thread. That is thread crapping.

I have a BB 8800, it's going to sit in the car with a inactive SIM (as in no data) and I'll only be using it for GPS, what is the best free prog to use?

I can't recall why I moved on but others may find it worth checking out.

Now, I'm trying to decide if Nav4All is sufficient, if not, then should I go to TeleNav, or would I be better off just paying for a separate GPS device. My concern with all BB GPS programs is that they seem to be effected when you get or make a call and my BB is primarily a phone first.

It really depends on how much you rely on the gps to get you to places. If you just use it occasionally since you have the BB with you, then it probably would be sufficient. I have to admit that I have a collection - one for hiking/x-country skiing (garmin 76cs), the one I added to the BB (Freedom puck) and one for the vehicle (tomtom920).

I predominantly use the Garmin in the backcountry - it is waterproof, I can load the topo maps I need for different areas and while it does do road-routing, the screen and data-interface leaves something to be desired. Long battery life.

The TT was recently used for a trip to Canada's ski country - nice sized screen and pretty accurate (although it has less point-of-interests than the garmin) and easier data entry and it TALKS. Really needs power connection. I plan on using this when I visit LA later in summer.

The BB - well, I have the phone with me regularly (wish Verizon did not disable the gps) and it seemed a natural for those times when I want to find something more spontaneously. Also the BB data in Canada would have made routine use pretty pricey - remember, it generally needs data to do real tracking/routing. The BB might also not be suitable in really rural areas since there might not be data.

I got Mobile GMaps installed and it don't work and TrekBuddy's site the "Download" link can't be selected.

GMaps there is a lot of diff Maps non of them load up, probably needs data.

I'm gonna sell this phone if GPS ain't going to work without data, I got this phone for free and I still feel like I pay too much lol.
