What gives? On my Alltel Curve google maps works fine showing my location, but BBMaps searches for sattelites and never finds them. Any ideas?

Many people using the 8330 for the past 3 weeks on Bell and Telus have repirted the GPS isn't working properly. Google Maps has not yet been updated to recognise the internal GPS of the 8330. Your problem is pretty much opposite of what I've seen elsewhere.
