Default GPS, free to use? - 08-27-2008, 07:44 PM

Even though I guess there are too many people has asked the same question, but I can't really find a clear answer on this one. So....

I am using Rogers - corp. plan without data plan. Wondering is it free to use the GPS feature on my 8800?

Thanks

You will probably have to call them to find out if the gps is enabled without using special or perhaps, even their software.

Otherwise you will be limited without DATA. There are two programs in which you can download maps to a computer and then move those maps to the Media Card. Trekbuddy and Mobile Gmaps (not google). They can be more involved and generally you need to plan your location so you can get maps in advance.

I use Google maps but I think you need a data plan to use it.

I'm not sure how you're missing it as I know people constantly answer these questions.

Your built-in GPS receiver is free to use. Verizon is the only exception as you have to subscribe to their GPS app to enable the built-in GPS receiver (though a BT GPS puck can be used without paying for VZ Nav).

A GPS app (often mistaken for GPS "service") may or may not be free. It really depends on the GPS app you're talking about. Refer to the stickied list of GPS apps for more info.

It's the same regardless of carrier. There are no restrictions for using the network of GPS satellites. However, you need a GPS app to make that positioning data meaningful. Additionally, most BB GPS apps require that you have a BB data plan to allow them to download map data.

It looks as though Vodafone are doing the same thing here in the UK; this month's brochure says, in the small print, "BlackBerry Sat Nav subscription lasts for 12 months of your agreement. Thereafter it is available on a monthly subscription."

No details seem to be supplied as to how much the monthly subscription is, it seems to be like signing a blank cheque.

It seems a little harsh to charge me for using a piece of my own hardware; can another app be installed in its place?

i'm having a silmilar issue with my gps not working.
it gets to "searching for satellites" and stays on that line forever.
my provider (cellular south) has no option for this on my account, so i just assumed it was free of charge.
am i missing something, or just being stoopid?

btw, bb pearl 8130 4.3.0.97

I cannot get the traffic feature to work. Any tips? Also, when you are connected to wifi are all the maps being downloaded through wifi or pay data?
