Default Finding bearing and range - 06-16-2009, 01:30 PM

I've been trying to find a way to enter a latitude and longitude in my 9000, and get a bearing and distance from my present position. Anyone know if this is this possible?

If not, anyone with a simple program that would do this for me?

Appreciate the help from the forum, thanks x 10^6

Dave

I am not sure I understand what you are looking for. Hopefully the following will help you.
1. change your latitude and longitude to decimal values remembering that north of the equator and east of Greenwich are positive (+) and south and west are negative (-) respectively.
2. using these signed decimal values you use blackberry maps to search by entering
the latitude,
a comma and then
the longitude.
3. you can then use get directions to get the distance between the bearing found in step 2. and where you are.

I hope this helps.

Thanks samnyemba,

Ok I think blackberry maps came with my unit, I see it in options, advanced options, applications, blackberry maps 4.6.0

I can load the maps icon, and see (mostly) street maps, can zoom etc
I use the menu key, see "find location" among others. But nothing seems to allow me to enter a lat long, even in the format you said.

What am I missing here?

thanks, Dave

Emacf1,

re my post in your gpslogger forum, yes I see I can use options - raw data - and now see a decimal format. Maybe I'll keep the prog this way.

Re Samnyemba's response to my query above, do you understand what he means by "entering the latitude, a comma and then the longitude" on the bold 9000?

I've tried to find the screen to do this, haven't been able.

Hawk

Sorry meant to get back to you earlier.

1. You need to check Advanced.
(In BB Maps press Menu, select Find Location and check mark Advanced)

2. Then enter the decimal coordinates in the first line of the Address.

3. Here is an example - read N as North, W as West, " as degrees and ' as minutes:
a. These are coordinates of place in Canada.
Lat: N 43" 44.6376'
Lon: W 79" 35.1156'

b. Convert coordinates to decimals i.e divide minutes by 60, West and South are -ve
Lat: +43.74396
Lon: -79.58526

c. So what you enter in the first line of the Address is:
43.74396,-79.58526

d. Click Search and you will be shown the point on Stevenson Rd.

4. Finally to get directions you will need to enter a second point by either of the following ways:
a. use Where I Am (i.e your GPS from blackberry Maps) or
b. Enter a location without Advanced check marked or
c. Enter a location using Advanced mode specifying a normal mailing address or
d. Enter a location using the Advanced mode and specifying a different decimal coordinate or
e. Enter a location by selecting a contact that has an Address entered in your BB Address book.

This works I use it always and tried it on my boss' Bold. I even use coordinates to store friend's addresses. Why, coz BB Maps does not interpret street number for Maps in Southern Africa.

5. Finally if you want to see how all this works, in BB Maps select Copy Location and paste it in a blank sms and or email. You will see the decimal values of the lon/lat.
