Cool GPS and Pearl - 08-01-2009, 02:31 PM

Is anyone having troule with google maps on Pearl? I can't get ANY GPS system to work. Everything was fine last week and now nothing. Google maps says "GPS not available at this time" and my Allsport GPS won't work at all. It worked fine this past Monday. I took my phone to Cellular South and they don't seem to know what the problem is. They also said that BB maps would not pick up a satelite here and could not pick up one until I was about 40 miles out of town?????

Thanks.

Satellites are overhead so cellular souths statement is moronic at best

What did you do just before the GPS and amp appps stopped working?

Do you have 'Location Services" set to "ON"?

You need to be outside with a clear view of the sky to get a good lock on. Have you tried that? Can take 20 minutes.

Default Verizon Wireless and Third Party GPS - 08-02-2009, 04:58 PM

I saw the the idea about running BB Maps in the background and being able to use 3rd party GPS on Curve and Perl. I tried to get around the VZW 3rd party block for about 9 months but never succeeded.

Finally I complained to VZW pointing out their open source policy, the fact that 3rd party GPS works on AT&T hosted devices and the number of angry listings I have seen from other customers. I suggested that I would rather move to AT&T than pay for an external GPS just to make my device work as advertized (There is a class action based on false advertizing).

The response they sent was very clear.
1. They will not unlock the GPS on the Perl or Curve.
2. If I want a GPS enabled Blackberry, upgrade to a storm.

In the end $'s beat disatisfaction. I have 2 more years on my contract so I will be staying with VZW for a while. I can only upgrade one of my phones and if I do there will be trouble in river city.

Bottom line - They will not budge. You can't get around the lock and if you stuck like I am and realy want the features your choice is the PUCK.

I don't think it's a "Pearl" issue as much as it is a CDMA BB issue as they handle GPS a bit differently than their GSM counterparts. I mentioned in another thread that you may want to search for "PDE" based on my initial investigations.

Well, they're wrong but with CDMA BB's there's some interaction required with the network from what I understand so it's not entirely moronic to mention the network. If I understand correctly, for some reason the specified PDE IP may be incorrect (or not specified at all) and that may cause a failure to obtain a GPS lock in some situations.

If anyone with a CDMA BB can verify we can post a sticky on the matter. I think the "CDMA GPS Lock Fix" thread discusses this matter.

Verizon "unlocked" the GPS on all their phones last December 1st (I think that was the date). After that date, Google Maps worked just fine on my Pearl 8130. It would normally say "Your location within 5 meters" or thereabouts.
