I have tried to download Google Maps on my 8100 from Google Maps and Google Maps with no success. I get to the download screen, but it then fails when trying to download. When I get there it shows the Size as 0. Any thoughts? I'm a Google Maps fanatic!

I downloaded Goole maps as well. It works for a few minutes and then I get an error saying that I don't have a network connection anymore (although I do - the browser and email still work fine.)

I put the usual "wap.voicestream.com" in for the APN. Did you put anything in for the username or password? I left mine blank.

Google Maps is free. wap.voicestream.com in the APN spot is correct. Leave the other fields blank.

The APN is in advanced settings under TCP.

I get java null pointer exceptions when trying to get directions from Google Maps however.

Ostensibly they do the same thing. I, and many other here, feel Google simply does it better. I find Google Maps to be much faster than Blackberry Maps.

The APN setting is: wap.voicestream.com
Leave the Username and Password blank.

Am I the only person that can't even get google maps to download to my BB? When I go to Google Maps, I choose to download and then push download. I then get an error that it couldn't download. It is weird that the size shows '0'. Any other way to download it?

Are you getting it from http://www.google.com/gmm ?

Sounds like an IT policy preventing you from downloading it. Are you on BES?

Everyone thank you for your tips. I finally figured out my unique problem. My copy of GoogleMaps was ported over from my 8700 when I switched devices from my 8700 to my 8100, thus my version of GoogleMaps was designed for the 8700. I deleted it and re-downloaded GoogleMaps, now the 4 and 6 key work properly! Thanks!

I don't have the 8100 yet but I believe the only difference between those two are, the Google Maps have traffic updates while the Blackberry Maps do not. The Blackberry Maps can be used with the Bluetooth GPS while the Google Maps does not.

In case anyone is still having problems. I finally figure out what I was doing wrong and have now set up 3 other people and working fine. Here are the steps:
1. Add wap.voicestream.com to your APN settings. DO not add a user or password.
2. Pull the battery and reset.
3. Once back on, go to the google maps download site and download the new version. The website can be found in the Google web page.
4. Here is where I messed up. When it finishes downloading, the default is to click OK. Scroll down and click RUN.
5. It should work fine.

Google maps stopped working for me. It had been downloading data fine and then just stopped. It seems to have cached what I had before but I can’t download any more data. Is there a finite limit to what it will download? I would hate to clear the cache by erasing all as it has some areas that I really need already downloaded and if I can’t download them again it would really a pain.

I had already set up the APN in the settings. According to Google its NOT supported on the Tmo network but it WAS working fine for me.

Any ideas? Anyone know how much data it will cache locally in general? Thanks!

OK, don't understand it but it just magically started working again. I hit "clear map" repeatedly and now it will download map data again. I don't understand why that apparently fixed it but it appears it did.

FYI- while this will work in Europe (Germany for example) I wouldn't be using it too much there as the per KB charge would kill you to even download a small area. I just calculated the cost of a download of a moderate area of a city and based on Tmo's data roaming charge it would have been $15! A paper map would be a better bet overseas.

It tends to be slow. You may have to click on it more than once. There bugs on the traffic updates. Sometimes it shows traffic on some sections of the freeway and other times it does not.

I have tried to get Google Maps to install but I cannot get it to work. I previously had a 7130 and was able to get this to work without issue.

I have followed the instructions and have added the wap.voicestream.com to th APN settings under TCP under Advanced Settings under options.

I have removed the battery and reset the phone.

I go to ://www google com / gmm

It says "Download Google Maps for 8100" and when I select it, i get:

"Invalid address :///gmm / apps / v1.3.1 / L1 / gmaps-blackberry-8100_v4_0_L1.jad"

Any ideas?

ps. sorry for the wierd spacing above, but it wouldn't let me post a website

*** so i figured it out, as simple as it was. I actually entered in http : www google com/gmm instead of http: // www google com/gmm. I guess the "//" is important! It took me to the download site, but didn't allow me to get to the next link. Interesting.

FYI--- If you're on Cingular you want to replace "voicestream" with "cingular" and dont put .com at the end..so it should be..
options>advanced>TCP>

APN: wap.cingular
user: LEAVE THIS BLANK!

The did not when I first tried because I had ported over from my 8700c including the 8700 version of BBmaps. I deleted it and downloaded the 8100 specific BBmaps OTA and now it works perfectly with 4 and 6.

I like having both. I use the 411 to get the addresses, and then copy/paste over into googlemaps for directions.

Downloaded without any problems, didn't even need to have an APN set. Keys 4 and 6 work OK for zoom out/in.
