Default cheap a$$ GPS adapter and Telenav on the pearl = sweet - 11-08-2006, 11:29 AM

I just got a craptastic $49 bluetooth gps reciever and I have to say the pearls GPS functionality is pretty darn cool. I just need a car mount that charges via the contacts on the back so I can set it in and not worry about running out of batteries (that and a bluetooth car kit so the voice comes through my stereo ^_^). Anyone know of a mount like this?

edit: I use telenav not intellinav as the title states. Sorry for the mixup

this is awesome... is that the cheapest GPS you were able to find? i currently have a high-end GPS device left over from my Army days, but it doesn't have bluetooth or any other way of connecting to the 8100 i'd like to get some in-car nav functionality, but not break the bank...

The link is there, just click on "$49 craptastic" above. but here's the text link just in case: Ambeon BT112A-GPS High Performance Bluetooth GPS Receiver AmbiCom Technology, Inc. BT112A-GPS

This is the cheapest I could find. I also found a coupon code on retailmenot.com for 15% off, just enter "techbargains" when you checkout

I have a data plan so I don't know if telenav will work without it, I would guess that it wouldn't though. I bet there is other software that doesn't need a dataplan though, just a GPS reciever.

I like telenav a lot, its got a ton of features (including audible turn by turn and automatic recalculation of directions if you go off course) it's $9/month though which is a downside.

Edit: I use Telenav, not intelinav sorry for the confusion!

That is the only plan telenav offers ;P. I just like the features better than the built in bbmaps app. Mostly, the audible turn by turn and recalculation. If I can find another program that does the same thing without the monthly payment I'd be all over it.

Also, This GPS reciever doesn't use SiRFIII it uses Nemerix.

anyone able to get the trial activated for this program? I sent the sms message to the number listed but didn't get the code back. I think, since its a UK number, it's not working.

That shouldn't matter. As long you don't get a message back saying that it was undeliverable. It might just take a while for them to respond.

WTF?? maybe it's 'cause I don't have an sms plan. I usually just pay the per message charge 'cause I don't use it that much.

i just ordered one. im not the type to buy generic, i always try to get at least a mid-range model, but for this price you cant really loose.

with the discount it was $51 shipped! i hope this works, its just a little cheaper then the $500 garmin dash-mount models

question- can i use this gps with google maps? i find google maps to be amazing on the pearl, its just like the pc version. a little slower of course, but its the same as google earth!

I looked at the Wayfinder Navigator software purchase page and it asks you for the model number of your phone. I didn't see the Pearl there. It lists RIM 8707, 7290, 7130, 8700 or 7100v. Will any of these work for the Pearl?

Thanks. I actually got this message though:

"Your phone is not compatible with Wayfinder's products. Please go to www wayfinder (dot) com for more information."

I was using Opera, I'll try it with the built in browser.

Edit: Works with BB browser. Although this still looks like the trial software (unless it can be activated later on).

www.wayfinder.com

Version 6.5.6 works on the Pearl. The other models are having a prior version pushed until they resolve an issue of rendering on one of their views under 4.1.

There is a major interface difference with Telenav and Wayfinder and the of course the pricing model differs from subscription to one time fee.

Doesn't appear to have it. Wonder how it compares? Not sure it's cheap at that price if it doesn't pull a signal.

so is wayfinder decent for use then? i just seen that its only $14 a year! thats not bad at all, they give you the option for a $100 lifetime membership, but i figure that google maps will have gps built in within the next year or two anyway. also, i only have a 1-year contract on the phone so throwing out another $14 to use gps for 12 months aint bad at all
