Default GPS Question and 7520 or 7100i Purchase

Please Login to Remove!

I got promoted at work and the new postion comes with a company BlackBerry. I get to choose between a 7520 or a 7100i. I like to geocache and I am hoping I can use one of these two to get longatude latitude right off the blackberry.

I am not sure if it is a problem, but they say the company does not allow me to get GPS service. I am assuming this is a subscription to a tracking system, UNLESS the GPS hardware is disabled in the phone unless you pay a fee. Does anyone know about this or where to go to find out?

On one hand I can see that is a way to make $$, but the other it drives me crazy that GPS is receiving only and I should be able to use the hardware if it is in my hand.

I am hoping that I can get the BlackBerry, and download some other third party software that will use the GPS internal hardware for me to geocache...

in great anticipation of your reply.... THANK YOU

It sounds like they may disable the GPS function through IT policy from your BES server. It's also likely that they limit other functions too like downloading 3rd party applications, and internet use. You'd have to talk to your company IT department to find out what they allow.

The way they described it was that the service we get is "company liable" which is supposed to have some level of security when sending/receiving data. I was told that I could install apps on it.

So I am thinking that IS just simply doesn't understand my geocaching needs of seeing just lat/long, or that the GPS hardware in the BBs is actually disabled upon purchase.

The disabling probably takes place when they connect it to the BES. It pushes a policy to disable the GPS. I've never used Nextel so I may not be the best guy to answer all your questions. <---my disclaimer!

There is not a good geocaching solution for the BB yet. The only one that really does it is SPOT and currently I can't recommend the program.

Find all sorts of info here:
