So to use google maps or blackberry maps as a GPS do I need to subscribe to some sort of GPS service and pay a monthly fee?

Google doesn't support GPS except on Helio. BBMaps is covered here

To use google maps or blackberry maps itself is free of charge. As for GPS goes, I believe you need to purchase a GPS receiver and then download a software for it to work with. Correct me if I'm wrong..
