Wirelessly posted (blackberry 8700c: BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

I'm somewhat new to the gps in a phone. I was just wondering if there is any services out there that can track a lost or stolen phone with the gps. Somewhat like onstar in cars. Or if you do find or steal a phone can you just disable the gps?

my reason for starting this thread was because i thought it would be a huge step to track phones and people from the gps in their phone. i never had a gps unit in any form. yes i know it may be unethical and have problems. but if i had my phone stolen from me i would like to track it down like a car with onstar. then again there is a huge difference from a $50,000 and a $500 phone.

I see where you are coming from though. Now shoes with GPS built in for tracking (adults now, manufacturer will have for kids soon). Shoes are also less expensive than cars but the technology is becoming cheaper to produce.
LA Daily News - GPS shoe shows where wearer is
Either way it is a consumer driven demand so once enough people are wanting this it will become available. Right now Stuffback and other services rely on the honor system for the return of the product.
USATODAY.com - Companies help get lost stuff back to you
StuffBak - Protect Your Mobile Assets
Of course if your BB is with your BES administrator they can send a "kill" command which wipes the device of information.

this is a great point, but what about the average bb user like myself thats not on bes and say i have been robbed they took my phone and tons of other belongings. with a police report it would be great to have my bb tracked. similar to a car with onstar. they only track it with a police report.

There is no GPS in the 8700 without a separate BT GPS puck. See my tips site.

This seems like a good place so I'll ask it here...I just got an 8100 from cingular and I have the GPS puck. My question is there is a link to download TeleNav maps for cingular. Are these the same maps as Stinsonddog talks about in his tips or do I still have to pay the 10/month? Do Telenav and Wayfinder include Hawaii? Thanks
