Default Is there an app for hiking etc? - 02-25-2007, 11:58 AM

Would love to see a general app to make the 8800 function like a basic handheld gps. It would be great to have speed, heading, waypoints, altitude, etc.

Check out SPOT on my GPS tips page. Until they make it more stable, I can't recommend it. They are supposedly making a version where you can save maps to the SP cards. I assume they will be picture files. That may work but don't know how one will zoom unless they are scalable vector maps. Trimble outdoors makes one too, but they have not answered my questions as of yet.

Did you choose the 8800 model? I see they posted 1.4. I will find the story on the new SPOT.

BlackBerryInsight » Spot GPS tool will support files for waypoints and maps on the Pearl

Is the story I had seen. This 1.4 for the 8800 doesn't seem to have these features yet.

I got a reply from Trimble saying that their software is not supported on smartphones like treo or blackberry 8800, but they would like to port their software to those devices ... however, they could not give a timeline for that.

I also contacted the makers of SPOT asking if they were maybe making software like Trimble, particularly AllSport GPS, as I heard rumors on other threads of that happening. At first they replied "a very interesting approach! Could you please tell us more on what exact features you are thinking of?", and when I described the idea of odometer, speed, elevation etc., and pointed them to AllSport GPS website, they replied "thanks a lot for your input. To be honest, we are sort before rolling out a new application. Please keep an eye on our website. "

So there you have it ... keep an eye on their website
