I didn't see this anywhere on the forum. It's a simple app. Took a little while to get it installed on my pearl, but then it was easy to connect to the bluetooth GPS. Allows for track logs to be exported to SD Card as .kml, .gpx, or .csv files. Shows basic trip info, distance, average speed, average elevation.

Took a nice 5 mile run this afternoon with the puck in one jacket pocket and the pearl in the other, and I watched a flyover of my route on Google earth about 3 minutes after I got home.

I haven't tried using a kml file, but the gpx files work great. Simply export the track log as a .gpx file, open google earth, then open the gpx file.

How did you install this? Which file, from where, how? I've got an 8800 and looking for something like this but so far with the install, no joy.

The .jar file from GetJar worked for me.

From your BB Browswer should work.

This won't work on 8800 unless you have a BT GPS puck. It doesn't support the internal GPS just like microsky.

Close but no cigar. I've been looking for something exactly like this, that would work with the 8800 internal GPS and act as a GPS logger or Geocacher. I had asked about this type of app on pinstack [can't post url].

I could see many uses people would have for this, for hiking, running, and what I would like to use it for, to make a log for geocoding photos.

After a battery pull reboot it seems to be ok on the 8800 with a BT puck. I will give it a spin later.

Will this display the basic sattelite info?

If not is there any freeboware that will display the basic stuff like a satellite map, speed, longitude latitude or maybe degree of precision?

Stinsonsdog, any update? Did you get a chance to play with this? Is it positive that this needs a puck and won't work with the internal GPS?

No setting for internal GPS so I think you need a puck. I have not tested it due to my BB getting crashed by the colorpearl app and now I am back up and running but gotta go back to work tomorrow. Will give it a try in due course.

on their web site they say "a bluetooth GPS required".
I have asked the developer if this tool will support the 8800 as well.

It certainly makes sense to use the internal GPS if you have one. It isn't that common, since you are the first person to ask for this feature. The internal GPS would have to be available from Java (JSR-179 Location API). According to the J2ME Polish site, here are the Blackberry 8800 capabilities:

The 8800 is not on the list of devices supporting the location API:

So I think it wouldn't work for you, unfortunately, unless the J2ME Polish site is wrong about the 8800.

The 8800 supports jsr 179(location api), but j2me Polish(which is a developement tool), may not have it supported yet....

Maybe you can refer him to the US site and then we would be able to use our internal GPS.

It's not Polish(as in Poland), but polish(as in shine).....Confusing I know!

I will reply to the developer with this info and see if I get anything back.

Any way to allow it to continue running in the background? Everytime i receive a call or check an e-mail, it stops and I have to start it again....

Not with the internal BT, but yes with a BT puck.

Will OR is their gonna be a program for the 8800 to track and record speed and time and distance, etc...? Is someone in the works on developing one?

I am currently involved in a silent beta test of such an application developed by Skylab Mobilesystems, the makers of the Spot GPS and Mapping tool. It works fine for me and my Pearl even though it has been designed for the 8800. I am pretty sure they publish that application very soon

Hey guys, I have been looking for something like this for my 8800 as well ... my activities primarily involve snowboarding, road and mountain biking, hiking and cross country skiing. I have had no luck so far. I have found Trimble Outdoors ... these guys make the exact GPS software I am looking for, in the form of their AllSport GPS product, alas 8800 is not supported. According to rep:

"Currently we do not support any Palm, Treo, or Blackberry device due to
compatibility issues. These are devices we would like to support in the
future; however, I do not know when a fix would be available."

Hopefully, something like this WILL be available soon. I know of a number of people also looking for something like this, currently resorting to multiple Garmin devices. I hope funkym is not pulling our leg saying that he is currently beta testing such an app!

I don't have both problems. Elevation is correct and even the maps are working after some tweakings

There are currently no time stamps on my tracks but the rest would be something like you want. ;)

Returning to the installation of GpsTrack ...

Tried to install the jar file OTA. It seems to be installed, but once I start I receive:

"Error starting GpsTrack: Module 'GpsTrack' attempts to access a secure API"



what I understood from other readings I made might be a problem of signature of the code. How to get off of that not doing the complicated procedure described elsewhere to convert a jar to cod+alx

can i download *.jar (or) *.jad files to SD card WITHOUT data plan?

what about a demo version. 24.99 isn't bad but I'd love to try it first.

You could download a jad or jar file to your PC and transfer it to your SC card, but there's no way to install an application from a file stored on the SD card.

I am a pearl user and I bought the Skylab MobileTracker with hopes it would do what I wanted. First, it connected to my puck (Holux 240) just fine for tracking. It had a few bugs but it was liveable. The biggest disappointment that I had was that it did not record time or distance and in Google Maps/Earth you need to manually select the path to get the actual distance, which if you have a long path it is a pain. If you want to see your basic movements it is a decent program and very basic interface. If you want to know any other information like speed, distance, etc, it does not seem to track that in the file. Maybe if they exported to GLX format it could be configured to contain this information and Google Earth can read that as well.

Good luck and I hope if they make updates registered users will get free upgrades to this product.

Since my last post I have found a good tool for finding the distance from the path created by MobileTracker. It is a little sloppy to get the information but if you desire the information it is worth it. The product is called GE-Path (Free at least for now) and you can find it at the following link:

Here is a quick step by step of what you need to do to get it to work.

1. Save KML from MobileTracker to computer
2. Open KML from MobileTracker with GoogleEarth (GE) 4.x
3. Right click on the path within GE and choose SaveAs..
4. Give the file a new name (I usually just append _GE to the end of the current file name so test.kml will be saved as test_ge.kml)
5. Open GE-Path
6. Select File Open KML and open the file you created from GE (test_ge.kml)
7. Select Make Path and Select Calculate Perimeter (you can set other options but this is all I have selected)
8. Select Run and save the file anyname you want
9. Open the file in GE and you will see the Perimeter Distance which is the total distance.

Each coordinate point will have a label and you can deselect the "Name" item so they don't show up in the GE view.

These steps are necessary because there is an anamoly with the KML from MobileTracker that it won't open in the GE-Path but if you open and save it from GE it is great.

I would love to hear others reaction and experience with the program and if you have found quicker ways of getting the distance of a tracklog created by MobileTracker or if there are any other tools for the BB that tracks time and distance.

Getting this GPSTrack to work on my Pearl seems to be my mission

lately but I can't seem to get past the Secure API error that was

posted by others. I have tried installing the software every which

way but Sunday...then I even tried Sunday and that didn't work. I

even, thanks to the help of other forum members, obtained a copy of

the GpsTrack.cod file that a person that had it working downloaded

with javaloader to see if maybe it was a version issue. I have lots

of data that maybe someone smarter then me (not hard to find) can

help get me to the next level with as I am at a roadblock.

First, my specs:

T-Mobile BB8100 Software version TMO 4.2.064 on BES with unrestricted

policy that I control so if you think it is something with the BES

policy let me know as I control the policy for my BES and can change

it to test ideas and theories but I have tried everything I can find

to fix this problem.

Now for some interesting notes/findings in all my research. I will

start with the theory it could be policy related.

Policy Related Theory:

In Application Permissions I have the default permissions set to

Allow everything listed including Bluetooth, GPS, etc. and the same

settings as default for the modules by using the handheld Application

Permissions option under Security Options. I then view the

properties of the Application and see basic info about the app.

However, when look at the properties of the GpsTrack module I see a

laundry list of Policy Restrictions including the following:

Email API
Event Injector API
Phone API
IPC
Local Connections
PIM API
Bluetooth Serial Profile
Handheld Key store
Key Store Medium Security
Browser Filters
Internal Connections
External Connections

Oh yeah and it is not a signed app as you can probably guess. Now

that all being said I have other unsigned apps that have not Policy

Restrictions, in fact no other module on my BB signed/unsigned has

any restrictions listed at all. If anyone has any ideas of why this

one app has all of these restrictions I am open to trying some

different approaches as I have tried 507ing my BB to make sure it

wasn't an app causing the problems.

My second theory is that it has something to do with my version of

the Handheld software and the application. Below is my application

not coded for my version of software based on my latest discovery

with another app.

HandHeld Software version and GpsTrack coding not compatible:

Here is what I learned, I recently tried to install the J2ME Map

software from the wap.landspurg.net page and accidentally installed

the CLDC 1.1 instead of the CLDC 1.1 minimum version. Interesting

enough I got the same error ("Secure API attempt") and when looking

at the Modules it had the same policy restrictions. Very interesting

because when I reloaded the CLDC 1.1 minimum version I got no errors

and in the Module properties there are no Policy Restrictions listed

but the J2ME Maps application has a problem with being able to select

the Use Bluetooth option in Param to make it useful, they say it is a

Pearl (trackball) issue but that is for a seperate topic.Now I am not

a programmer by any means but with this information I am hoping again

that maybe someone knows the difference between the CLDC1.1 and CLDC

1.1 minimum and can help. The source code for GpsTrack is available

on the developers website so if anyone is gracious enough to look at

the code, make some updates I am more than willing to help test any

mods if a .jar is posted for OTA or the .cod is provided for

Application Loader installation.

A quick update...because I am impatient I decided to assume that the reason it might not be working was related to the version of the Handheld software I had installed, which was the TMO 4.2.0.64 (this is the latest from TMO). Therefore, I decided to download the latest from Rogers posted as a sticky in the 8100 Discussion Forum and this seemed work!!!

I haven't gotten a chance to use it yet but it opens and I don't get any errors.

Good luck to all but the Secure API problem seems to be a conflict with the TMO or possibly other builds of the handheld software not a policy issue, assuming you have a unrestricted policy installed.

Boy this update solved a lot of my problems. J2MEMaps also had problems that made it impossible for me to use it effectively, including the tracking functions but this update also solved that problem as well. Thanks to all that spent anytime helping me troubleshoot this problem and also those that post information about new Handheld software and developers of great apps.
