Default Help! I can't seem to activate GPS on my 8800!! - 04-29-2007, 07:03 AM

I am a TMO 8800 user and was told that GPS works with BB maps as well as GOOGLE maps.

It does not acquire any satellites when i press on 'start GPS' in BB maps.

i can't seem to find the option to activate GPS in GOOGLE maps at all.

Any help would be appreciated.

Best,

Nick

Google Maps has no GPS hooks. I personally think it's a superior product, and the only reason I have BB Maps is for the GPS.

Correct. No GPS with Google Maps. It should work with BBMaps, though.

i was just outside trying to acquire a GPS signal/satellite within BB maps. no such luck. i have not tried refreshing the GPS in adavanced options. might that do the trick? i am running OS 4.2.1.74 on a TMO 8800. i am in lower manhattan. might THIS be impeding satellite acquisition? seems unlikely but...

thanks for everyone's input

Go to the tallest building and try. Turn it on. Jump. It will lock by the time you hit the ground. Seriously. The buildings are the issue especially for the first lock which takes a little longer. Also hold it away from your body. Finally see my GPS tips page.

Stinsondog...very funny indeed. that solution is a bit, shall we say, messy?

nice to know that relative newbies are still being treated with sarcasm and like a bit of a nuisance by the pros. very much in the spirit of a forum designed to be a source of learning for people who have caught the 'bug'

actually, you get points for being funny so, no offense taken.

Give me a break! Stins is one of the nicest guys on the forum. He has written many tips docs for new users. He should have told you to search as there are other threads about this. He gave you good info with a small amount of humor. Settle down.

Angry still no luck with GPS / BB maps / TMO 8800 - 04-30-2007, 08:55 AM

I tried refreshing the GPS (no satellites found) in advanced options and gave BB maps ample time to locate but nothing. Could this be an OS issue or a BB maps version issue? I am running OS 4.2.1.74 on a TMO 8800 with BBMaps version 1.1.27

Sorry to keep harping on this but it is frustrating.

STINS! where are you??

Best,

Nick

At first, I had a similar experience with not being able to acquire a GPS signal. What worked for me was to take the sim out for about a minute then replace back.

Refreshing GPS after doing this took about 10 seconds to lock and load.

dont think you needed another thread for this.

but I know they have said this but it need clear line of sight to the satleites for the initial lock. This is critical, and also it can take like 30-1 min for mine to get the satelites. But it sounds like the problem might be that buildings are blocking the line of sight, not to bring up another post but can you go to a roof and try without any buildings blocking?

The chip will remember the last satellite positions so the first lock can take a bit. It is important to be free of all tall buildings and then also keep the unit away from your body. Being in NY will hamper this. Let us know.

sorry guys for doubling up. yeah i will try the SIM card thing and go to my roof as well which is pretty darn high.

the battery cover of the 8800 is a bi&%h to open, they could have come up with a better solution.

FWIW it does get easier to open. I would skip the SIM card issue until you have really tried a clear sky line of sight. Bring a beer with you and stay away from the edges.

Who can drink just one beer? It would be best to bring yourself a six pack.

GPS, six pack and a NYC rooftop; sounds like a good time to me.
