Default Two GPS thoughts/questions on 8800 - 04-30-2007, 03:19 PM

I did a bit of searching on this and didn't turn anything up, can the 8800 be used as a "gps puck" for a computer? if so how does one enable this?

Also an idea I had for golf tracking was to have a program that accessed the GPS and allowed you to click once when tee-ing off and then again when you arrive at your shot that immediately reported the distance you hit the ball. I'm not really looking for more than that as I use mobile.oobgolf.com (free oobgolf: Main login required) for tracking my stats and scores but having that yardage would be a nice piece of information to have.

Any thoughts on this?

Commercial grade GPS is only accurate up to one meter (at best) so the distance would not be exact.

My golf swing isn't exactly exact either so I'm not too stressed about it but it would be nice to get a pretty general idea.

Most importantly, will it tell me exactly how far right of the fairway I have gone. The question is not usually "how far did I hit the ball" or "where am I in the fairway"; the question usually is "how in god's name am I gonna bounce the ball off of that tree, that bear, skip it across the water, and then get back into the fairway". Will it help me with that?

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8800/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

bbgolf has a "test gps" function that tags a spot with a tap of the space bar and then tracks distance from that spot until you tag a new spot. I have not checked it for accuracy, but it just might do for you. http://www.mascogolf.com/bb/bbGolf.jad

I'll give this a try, is there an OTA installer for bbgolf? I'd read a little about bbgolf but hadn't given it too much thought as I can't imagine it will be better for score tracking that oobgolf: Main is, plus as I understand it bbgolf is pretty much just for your personal information. Oobgolf let's me discuss (ridicule) games with buddies that live in other states.

The link I posted is the OTA link. BTW I completely agree and have signed up on Oobgolf this afternoon, entered my home course (Los Serranos South) I'll start to post to it this weekend.

How do you like it so far? The fact that I can track my scores via computer after the fact or real time using my bberry on the course really makes it a winner for me. Plus the guys that run the site are very cool and quick to post fixes/new features when they get requests for them.

They have a pretty decent community brewing over there as well, I love their caption this contests.
