Default Someone really needs to write a good GPS hiking application. - 05-01-2007, 05:36 PM

I wish there was a good hiking app that made the 8800 etc perform like a handheld Garmin Etrex etc.

The GPS capabilities will never match those of a Garmin device. Woul dbe less expensive and more robust to just purchase a Garmin device. Personally I love my Rino 120.

There is the GPS Track software but doesn't support the 8800 internally. Need a puck for it too work.

While this seems like a great program, for it to be an top notch hiking app, it needs topo capability.

What do you mean with "topo capability"?

Wirelessly posted (8703e Sprint: BlackBerry8703e/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/104)

www.trimbleoutdoors.com is a cool app, but I am waiting to hear back if they plan to support the newer BB devices. Their device listing has not been updated in a while.

Though MobileTracker looks good, I am hesitant to plunk down $24 unless I can try it first. Is there a trial version available? I could not find a link to one.

What I meant by "topo capability" was the abilty to display the topography of a given landscape that you will traveling on by foot.

As someone who works for a mobile applications development company my opinion is that there in not a lucrative market for a hiking application on the BlackBerry. You probably won't see a decent one for a very long time.

By the way, we make GPS applications for BlackBerries but we aren't venturing into this vertical for this exact reason (we don't see a way to make money).
