John I downloaded 1.5.1 and I dont get the GPS functions. I am on 8700 Rogers and BT359. The Google maps website says it only works on Helio plans and Windows? Obviously yours and others works. Am I doing something wrong?
First, are you even getting the menu item "Bluetooth GPS"? I assume you've paired the BB to the puck?

FYI, it does not appear to work with Sprint's 8703e, which has an internal GPS receiver. I do not have a puck because I do not need one.

I still like the app, but unless anyone can explain how I can get it to work on an 8703e, the LBS features are useless.

For those that did not find the GPS function after download, make sure you are actually using the 1.5.1 version. For me, I installed Google Map using their google service, and it is a 1.4.1 version. THe interesting thing is when I go to gmm to download the 1.5.1 version of Google Map, I can download it and it actually create a NEW icon. I had been clicking my "old" one many times and I am puzzled about why I did not see the GPS button. Then I figure out that they installed a NEW version and does not replace the old one, which is probably being bundled by google service.

That indeed was my expeience some time ago when I attempted upgrade by downloading google maps with the services bundle. Ended up two google maps applications. Also, someone stated in a post a while back that the version of google maps in the services bundle is different than the maps alone download. For what it's worth.

I always delete the current version of Google Maps before installing a new version. I've run into problems otherwise.

I dont get that menu item. I am paired with the BT-359 because I use it with Wayfinder so I know it works. I definitely have 1.5.1 as stated in the application however surewipe now tells me the library is 1.4.1. I will remove the old version re-install 1.5.1 and let you know shortly.

Any other suggestions?

Can someone tell me how to and what to download to my bb8800? when i went to the google /gmm it gives palm, windows mobile and BES options but no BIS. Would the BES download work on BIS ? I am anewbie, please help?
so If we download this google map, woult it still cost the data consumption for regular use of google map>?

Yes you will incur data charges for Google maps. It uses quite a bit of data, as well.

I managed to download the map and tried it out, It seems like Google map consumes more data than BB maps. I wish Garmin comes out with theSD card soon. I am not a big fan of mutimedia files on SD card.but Maps would be great since Rogers wireless charges you an arm and a leg for their data service.
* by the way i dont see turn by turn direction in google map but bb maps shows the moving arrow. Google arrow doesnt move unless you exit out and restart the maps. Am i doing somethign wrong?

Do you have to download this app via OTA or can you download it and use the app loader. I tried downloading it on my computer first, but the only version I can download in this manner is version 1.4 not 1.5 I cant use my blackberry browser so I have to download onto my computer first, any ideas?

Thanks

It's generally an OTA download directly throught the BB's browser.

I would recommend that you un-install GMM 1.4 before downloading the new version. Installed fine after that. I use the BT-359 GPS Puck.

Bluetooth GPS option is weird (to me anyway).
Serial Command or CPP Slave. If I remember correctly, CPP Slave worked to determine my location.

Found the tracking while driving about the same at BBMaps. Yes it is delayed in regards to showing intersections while driving, but that may be because the puck only updates coordinates every 1 sec. You move quite a bit every second.

North is to top of phone and the screen scrolls to keep the blue dot (you) centered on the screen vs BBMaps which scrolls / turns the map to show your direction to top of phone.

Comparision of product to BBMaps.
No speed / direction indication
No upcoming street indication

Do like that you can get directions from current location rather than having to type in a "from" address. Great for travelers leaving from the airport. Thought this was unique to GMM but it shows in the latest BBMaps 1.1.32

Once you have directions in place, your location will be tracked along the route. It doesn't re-calculate the route if you veer off track.

In my limited comparison BB Maps is more reliable and has a much easier interface. Just wish it could search businesses like google but I can do that with the Google Locator or Google 411 and then past the address into BB Maps for directions.

Nice addition, but I think there is room for improvement.

1) The stability issues mentioned earlier
2) Would be nice to see speed, heading, altitude, and satellite acquisition.
3) I think BB Maps has a "Screen Saver Off" feature that would be nice.

When I turned it on this morning I had my GPS puck lying on my bed. It picked up the satellites instantly through the window. Switched to satellite view and zoomed in and the dot was actually on the correct spot on my house (MBR on right side in back). Also, it starts up and acquires satellites very fast.

I have the Globalsat BT-359.

BBMaps tracks me fine, whilst driving, I found it to track pretty well, very little lag and was pretty much spot on with the Satnav in my Toyota Prius.

However Googlemaps was a different story. It fixed my location 140miles to the west!

Yes, I think there are some issues with GMM 1.5.1 that they need to work out.

I have a new 8703e from Sprint and enabled Location Based Services but no GPS dot appears on the Map. I have Google Maps 1.5.1 and the only option for GPS is Bluetooth in that list. I'm hoping that I've done something wrong as I just got this but so far it appears the internal GPS is just not working with this.

Default How to remove gmaps from 7130c - 05-13-2007, 02:23 PM

quick question - how do you do this? I tried first by unchecking the maps in the google services list on the gmm page, that did not remove it. Then I tried using the desktop mgr - application loader - and I had some glitch which required a complete install of everything again (luckily I backed up, so its ok.) just wondering if there is a safer way to do this.

i have a 7130c on cingular/at&t

thanks

ps: the reason I tried this was because I found a GPS receivr that I am hoping will pair up with my phone i-Blue 737 Bluetooth GPS (32 channel, Auto On/Off, WAAS) (Your Choice of Free Mount) for 75 bucks. just want to be sure i get the software end correct , esp since cingular att does not allow bbmaps.

It gets better. Driving home tonight, I was travelling East and Google showed me travelling west! bbmaps tracks perfectly.

On the device, go to Options >Advanced Options >Applications. Scroll down to Google Maps. Highlight it and click the menu key (or trackwheel) and select delete.

I have the 8700g and am contemplating paying for the GlobalSAT BT-359. I like Google Maps better than BB Maps, but either will work and I understand I won't be getting voice or written directions.

My ? is this -->IS THE COVERAGE STABLE AND RELATIVELY ACCURATE OR NOT?

I appreciate your help in advance.

Yes its stable. They did do an upgrade to 1.5.2 to fix some things. See my BB tips page for some more info on all the apps. Infosspace find it is also something you might try.

hey folks-

just made to the switch to the 8800 and trying to get my hands around the GPS functionality. Downloaded the new google maps, but cant seem to get my connection straight--as in i cant seem to connect at all.

I went to advanced options and check the GPS setting, its set to device but it cant find anything to connect to. I am in DC, which i would have thought should have been able to find a connection no problem.

Any thoughts?

Just tried 1.5.2 with my 8100 and a Holux GPSlim240 BT GPS. Worked great. I got it showing my location, typed in the address I wanted to go to, and it mapped it out. To get it back in GPS mode, hit '0'. It leaves the purple trace, so you just drive.

Only issue I had was going out of my EDGE area into GSM. No data = no fun.
