Yes it is, as well as for all other data transmission, email, PIN messaging, MMS, and internet/browser use.

Most deff will need it. GPS uses a lot of data. I have so far used 14.5mb of data this month.

Default Data plan not technically needed... - 05-10-2007, 12:56 PM

You can use the gps functionality without a data plan, as long as the app you are trying to use does not need any data from the internet. Most people are refering to mapping apps like google maps or bbmaps. For instance, apps like bbGolf and gpsTrack don't require a data plan...

I don't see how no data is used by gpsTrack as it still acquires information either with internal or BT GPS. With gpsTrack it only works with the BT puck no internal GPS (from what I have read). If you want to track your shot for distance then I guess bbGolf is the program you want. Check out SD's BB GPS review:

Stinsonddog's Blackberry GPS Tips

I think the OP is thinking of GPS usage like with travel and location based services so in that case a BB unlimited data plan is a must. BB data plan is essential if you want to be able to email, MMS, or surf the web. It comes down to the type of data plan you will need. For me I am a heavy data user so the unlimited plan is ideal for me.
