Help With Mobiletracker on 8800 -
05-26-2007, 03:16 PM
Mobiletracker is what I've been looking for, so I purchased it last night. It's installed correctly, and a quick test of a few data points worked well.
However, I did some longer tracks which included going into and out of GPS range. For those, when I went back and selected "stop tracking", it came up with "0 KML events logged." Sure enough, the kml file was empty. - lack of GPS signal while in buildings
- Putting 8800 in/out of holster
- Making/receiving phone calls
- Ditto on email messages
Have anyone had enough experience with this application to know the limitations or why it's not logging events. So far, it might be:
Loving the 8800 and BES Express, now looking to get full use from the GPS capability!

What I'm not sure is that if the problem is with the application or maybe the underlying O/S. I'm on travel right now, but will reach out to the developer when I get back in town.

I am having issues too now trying this out. Can't say why it did not record yesterday, but really frustrating that it did not. If I watch it and set it to report the logging, I can see it work, but whenever I don't watch it, it never fails to not record.

Update from Developer -
06-08-2007, 10:46 AM
It appears 1.1.0 in MobileTracker terms means beta code. Here is a response I received when asking about the problems seen:

thanks a lot for your feedback. There are still some issues with the current version: First, you need to perform "Start", "Stop" and "Start" again to get the GPS working on some devices. Moreover, the tracking stops when the signal is lost. That are two very bad issues we could not figure out before. Anyway, a new version is already on its way which is supposed fix that. Moreover, it will come with some more features and all of our current customer will - of course - get a free update.
|
So, to work:
- start-stop-start
- Don't leave GPS coverage
I'll give them a couple weeks then ping them again.

I had purchased this software this afternoon (before I read this thread) and now I feel as if I've totally been cheated.
I have Google Maps and BB Maps installed so I know my GPS works (in the area I'm at). I have verified my permissions are set to allow for connections.
I have tried to get his thing working for over 6 hours now with no success. I keep getting a "0 have been exported to KML" error. Given their was no documentation with this software I started searching the web and I stumbled on this thread. It appears the software is no good to begin with.
Is their a deterministic way to make this software work always? I leave for vacation this coming Saturday and I'd really like to have this working before I leave.
If you are on the fence on buying this software I'd suggest to hold off until they fix it.
Thanks,
Joe

Hello everyone,
Found a workaround. Exit the mobiletracker application completely, open up blackberry maps and let that get the gps feed, than hide that application (do not close it.) - open up mobiletracker again, and make sure the notify every 10 or whatever is on - so you can verify it's working. start it up, and it should notify you after the first ten, etc. You can than hide the application.
Looks like the Mobiletracker's GPS controller sucks.. anyways, a workaround that works for me.
Cheers

Others have commented about possible issues with the app, but in addition remember that:
1) GPS does not work anywhere where it does not have line of sight to the satellites.
2) The BB does not do voice and data together and voice has priority.

I do understand that line of sight is necessary, but I would also expect that the application would log events w/o data, then start re-logging once signal has be reacquired.
Didn't know about point 2, thanks for the info!

We will see. Going to test it on the Mtn Bike in a few.
But what does this mean?
Adjustable altitude mode: absolute, clamp to ground, relative to ground.

Didn't work on nearly a 2 hour ride. Maybe I didn't wait long enough for it to export before giving up. Also the GPS State:Off - could never get it to read on, yet I did get it to record short trips.

I just got back from a trip and updated to 1.2.0 also. Same as Stinsonddog, I can see activity (X/Y coords and distance changing), but the GPS State always stays in Off.
I also have seen it lock up (no trackball movement but the X/Y keeps updating for a bit) and then throw an exception:

Uncaught exception:
Application MobileTracker(640)
is not responding; process
terminated

I'll try to repower my 8800 and see if that does anything....

Wirelessly posted (AT&T (Cingular) 8100 Pearl: BlackBerry8100/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)
This is one app I'd love to have on my 8100 to track motorcycle club rides.
Guess I'll keep waiting for the bugs to get squashed.

Will Mobiletracker work on a 8700 with GPS puck?

I use it with my Pearl and a Holux GR-231 Bluetooth GPS receiver. I am not experiencing the issues that are mentioned for the 8800. Therefor, I just can recommend it

I already posted in another thread, but at the risk of crossposting, have you been able to geotag with MobileTRacker 1.2.0 output, and how? I've not been successful... -lj
