Default Can a BB user with google maps view a Google map by its URL ??

Trying to help a friend out, but I am getting stuck.

On my own BB (8800), I have Blackberry Maps. If I have a URL such as maps.BlackBerry.com?lat=45.37174&lon=-75.64713&z=1&label=Office , I can simply click ( or menu click) on the URL and get to the map...and that URL can be within an email, or in the Address book notes, in a cell inside an Excel file attachment etc, and it works great.

But my friend (wiht model 8700) only has Google maps on his BB. The equivalent URL for google maps is : maps.google.ca/maps?q=45.37174,-75.64713(Office) ......but its not launching a map.

Does Google maps work fundamentally differently?? ....ie can one activate the map from a URL?? ...or must one type in values??
