Maybe VZW and ATT are fixing to merge and are currently synchronizing their management styles.

Never happen, AT&T is union, just think of how many pathetic Sales reps and CS reps would come to VZW or in the merger. Nope Nada Zip. Heck where I am the AT&T people in the corporate store's don't know jack, the Agents give the best service going. Let me rephrase that (1) Corporate store is good the rest they don't give a rats ass about you, your just a commission to them after the 30 day trial.
As far as BB8820 locked down or what ever you want to call it. Until someone gets it in there hands that knows the functionality I would not believe any of the rumors.
Verizon is supposed too release a version of the GPS functionality by close of 3rd qtr, and there keeping it locked down on whats going to work and not work. But the new Moto Q9 is being released for sale on the web on the 24th of the month, wonder how much of that they hacked and crippled?
Either hack the device and make these things work, rewrite the code or switch providers or just deal with it .

Just wanted to quote my previous statements, as it seems some of you are getting worked up over what is possibly a non-issue, just as it's been for almost a year.

Download and install the 8820 software, edit the LBS.alx file, connect to BDM, and an let the device do an automatic reboot. This enables it to work with BlackBerry Maps (of which is not preloaded on AT&T-branded BlackBerry devices). Download Google Maps and it works just fine.
If it turns out this is not the case, so be it. But I could definitely see how misinformation could spread through the lips of someone from the inside of AT&T who didn't know any better and was simply reading marketing material. Afterall, if I was behind the decisions at AT&T, I would definitely want everyone who needed to know some sales material to think that GPS would be an enabled feature for $10/mo, right? You start with planting a seed with the employees and letting it grow into food for your customers.
Just some food for thought.

jibi i think your 100% correct.
I think there is a certain site that wanted publicity and created this issue and used apple as one of the villains. But i think your right, it will be the same as the 8800's GPS.

Can you provide a link to the procedure to edit the LBS.alx so you can use the 8800 with BB maps? I assume doing this allows you to use any GPS compatiable software right?

Goto here: BlackBerry -
And then follow the Download Blackberry Maps now, have your BB connected to the computer USB, and use IE, because its using Active X, and the rest happens automagicly.

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gps-...lackberry.html
Check that link and the GPS section of this site for GPS answers. This procedure allows BBmaps to be shown on ATT phones. All other GPS apps are fully functional.

I scrolled over to Fushun (near Shenyang) China and any detailed maps are non-existent. I'm not looking for turn-by-turn directions, just more than a railroad.

I normally don't respond about your Engrish, but how in the hell did you not misspell 'congressional'? Just curious. I had an ex-girlfriend who claimed she was dyslexic because she couldn't spell or piece together sentences (and to think she's a college graduate now) ...I always thought she was just stupid (although I don't think that about you, Galv).

I'm also waiting for the 8820, just for the wifi. Up till now I have never been able to get gps working on my 8800, so them crippling gps really doesn't bother me at all.
Sucks that they still do stuff like that though...

Since both carriers offer exception coverage in many markets, I'd say the free market is working as intended. :-D
RIMM is going to be at the mercy of the carriers since virtually no one is going to buy an unsubsidized handheld (and CDMA carriers in the U.S. [VZW and SPRINT] don't tend to allow unbranded handsets on their networks, leaving only the GMS carriers (ignore the depricated iDEN for the moment). and carriers need to increase ARPU.
I don't see people complaining that WiFi voice is for UMA and not free services a la Skype. I think that should be a bigger concern for most people than GPS.
As long as people are buying subsidize handsets (aka less than full MSPR) what exactly do you expect? the carriers are going to want revenue. And as long as the revenue is being used to either increase features, reliabilty, or usability for me and my company. I won't complain to much.
I know RIMM may not appreciate carriers restricting WiFi or GPS access, as long as the carriers are moving handsets, I don't believe RIMM will care. RIMM has so much other concerns that could build value for consumers or companies, it isnt funny. i'd like to see even more development. the cheapskates can complain all they want.

I can understand what Galvanic is saying but suggest that a spell checker function be added to the forum if possible.
My earlier comment about VZW and AT&T merging was a less than successful attempt at humor. I say that because some of the reader took it seriously.

According to crackberry.com ( September 4th Launch Date for the AT&T BlackBerry 8820 | CrackBerry.com) the AT&T 8820 will be released with GPS undisturbed. Has anyone received the mailer mentioned in the link?

Last I read on this subject was this.
AT&T Pays Attention To The Blogosphere | RIMarkable | The official, unofficial BlackBerry Weblog
You’ve got to give it to BlackBerry Cool… When they leaked rumors that AT&T was going to lock down GPS in the BlackBerry 8820 internet collectively got ticked off and it would appear that AT&T has changed their tune.
Right now RIM and AT&T are in the process of renegotiating the GPS status of the BlackBerry 8820. We’re not sure if the deal has been finalized yet, but if the AT&T documents are correct, it seems at least all but a done deal.
