If you're still in your evaluation period, try to get it replaced, maybe it's a defective unit. Also, you might try re-instaling the OS to a version where none of the ALX files have been edited. I'm an experienced software developer and it's very easy to make a mistake in one of these files that might cause an important piece of software to be downloaded into the phone causing it to not work quite right.

I hope you get your phone working. I'd hate to think I'm the ONLY person who has a problem!

I don't see how it could be a defective unit since the GPS works when I subscribe to TeleNav. But I'm gonna try replacing the unit anyway. If nothing else just to pay at&t back for the trouble.

Have performed a complete wipe. And reinstalled the Original files. No change.

Tell me about it, it sucks. I can't figure this out. at&t and RIM both act like I'm seeing what I'm supposed to see and somehow the people with working 8820's are the people that have something wrong.

All in all, at&t is burning through any loyalty I had with them.

That does suck. I really don't know what the problem could be.

I'd already done the return when the salesperson mentioned to me that you only get one exchange. After that I'd have to send the phone off to warranty repair... None of the salespersons at the store had ever heard of someone getting internal GPS to work without TeleNav (and were less than impressed when I mentioned that I had actually held two 8820's in my hand mine and a co-worker's neither of which had TeleNav and the coworkers worked fine). So instead of getting stuck with a device that I would be unhappy with the salesperson put a battery and my sim in a new 8820, we walked outside scanned for satellites and got nothing.

However I finally got a CSR at at&t to say that the GPS *should* work without TeleNav. I'll post the ticket # tomorrow when I'm back at the office.

So. I no longer have the 8820. I'm going to give it a week or so and go to a different at&t store and try again.

I might start with a fresh account just to see if it's something screwy with my account.

Also, I'd be interested in hearing from those with working 8820's:
1. Did you buy your 8820 outright or did you upgrade?
2. Where did you buy your 8820? Retail Store or Third Party (and which)?
3. Were you already an at&t customer or did you open a new account?
4. If you were already an at&t customer did you upgrade the # to the 8820 or add a new number for the 8820?

In summary... Despite my getting off on the wrong foot and sticking the other one in my mouth... I appreciate the help you've given me. I've not given up on BlackBerry... You'll probably see me again in short order. If not... Well, "So long, and thanks for all the fish [help]!"

at&t Advanced Network Services, CSR: Billy Hines
Ticket #: ANS4864954
Billy Agreed that the GPS *should* work without buying TeleNav.

RIM Case#: 4240239
RIM told me at&t locked the GPS so you *have* to buy TeleNav in order to use the GPS.

Well, it's definitely crippled, or not.
