Google Maps and/or BB Maps are free, and will do similar things to Telenav, but as mentioned, are not as capable as Telenav.

Google Maps for Google.

Do a search on this forum for BB Maps

Telenav is the only one with voice command and auto reroute as far as I know.

It is very difficult to use either BBMaps or GoogleMaps while driving and very dangerous also, unless you have someone in the car to use it and navigate for you.

Supposedly this will give you turn by turn directions and is free: amAze - Free GPS Navigation for your mobile phone! I haven't used it yet, but I've been considering...

Default BB maps and google maps - 09-13-2007, 12:44 AM

Just got the first BB this week. It's a 8830.

I saw an add for it and said it will replace a navigational device. I ask the guy at the counter whether it would give a turn by turn audio directions - the guy said "yes".

I thought I was missing something but mine dosn't - more like mapquest.

After reading this thread, seems like that is all it does. Am I right? Anyone tried the link on the previous post?

Thanks

Allan, welcome to the Forums.

Out of the box, the 8830 will not give you audio turn by turn. Your salesperson was mistaken.

Telenav does. I have not used the free app referred above. Try it and see, and report back what you find.

I'm gonna side kick his butt! I thought I was retarded or something.

I looked on some other threads - seem llike I have to pay like $10 to make telenav work, is that right.

Freeware - I get jittery with those things unless someone who is tech savvy have tried it and recommend it.

Google Maps will give you on screen turn by turn directions with no audio. BBMaps is pretty good too. The audio turn by turn are all pay for use apps.

You're going to have to choose one or the other... The more fully featured GPS apps do cost money. I highly recommend Telenav. I just recently used it when driving a new car home from Indianapolis to Houston. I'd also highly recommend the Proclip.

He was really not wrong as the device will do as you asked but he failed to tell you that to get all the services you want, it will cost you extra money.

You really should not trust what any of these sales people say, he is trying to sell you a phone with service and they have been known to s t r e t c h the truth many times!

No, if you look at the link I sent you, you will see what it is.

May not be what you want, just an offering of an idea. But that website will track your BB where ever it goes. And you can see from the website.

Download Mapqust Navigator. It's free, and it works on my Curve w/ the BT puck and works on my dads 8800. I know some people have problems with it, but it's worked well for me.
