Shouldn't the blackberry allow me to talk on the handset even if it has a bluetooth speaker connected? I have to hang up then redial if I leave the car with seems kind of lame.

The phone is a Curve 8320 with a Motorola T305 speakerphone.

I believe you can just press the Blackberry key while in the call and select Activate Handset (I think that's the phrase) and the call will return to your handset. You can switch back to the bluetooth speaker in the same way, and the same commands are available when listening to music via an external BT speaker.
