| If you select manual like Workingmen has said, then pick your home carrier, you will stay on your carriers GPRS network where it is available. You cannot be on CarrierA's GSM network and on CarrierB's GPRS network.
Find out if your carrier has data coverage where you are dropping to GSM only and then if they do, see if you can find out if all the channels are in use.
