I got my curve 2 weeks ago, and they sent me 2.5mm headsets.

Sprint most probably; I believe RIM does not sell/ship directly to consumers.

Adapters are available to convert the 3.5 phone to a 2.5 headset.
About $ 15.00 but thats Rim price so you should be able to get a lot cheaper

go directly to a Sprint corporate store and slap them upside the head with it. they should exchange it for the right one without grief. bring the whole box and kit with you just in case.
