Do you know whether there is a way to mount the 8320 without the mini sd card? I have made an attempt to do so - (in Ubuntu 7.04) - my laptop sees the blackberry, is able to identify it...

...but will not complete the (auto) mount process. Maybe there is a (non-mini sd card) manual/fstab-related mount solution? Or, is the mini sd the "only" way?

You need the SD card.

Besides the technical reasons for mounting, you really don't want to be running your shiny new 8320 without an SD card, you'll quickly use up all the meager internal memory with pictures, wallpapers and ringers (besides the other normal data like contacts, etc.). Even a basic 128mb or 256mb SD card is enough to squeeze by on, you could fit a handful of songs and a couple dozen photos on that (average high quality 8320 photo size is 400k to 700k depending).

I think I read an earlier post of yours (rivviepop) - which I can't seem to re-locate - where you suggested a manual mount (after adding an entry to fstab) - but that might have been in a situation where the person (you were advising) had an sd card...anyway - any technical insight you might pass along would be welcomed.

I hear you re: the benefits of the sd card - and I also have heard that the 1gb is a "better" card to get because the 2gb "may" be too much for the 8320 to handle....

Pretty much - RIM has not implemented such a feature for us to use, which is not that uncommon in cellphones with SD cards; the USB Mass Storage is exposed for the SD card use, but the internal memory is not. (this is not true with all phones, but a majority of them - I have an iMate from Malaysia which *does* expose the internal memory as mass storage, e.g.)

I think you've mis-read, check your posts again. I use a 2gig in mine (already had it from another phone), many people use 4gig and 6gig non-SDHC cards; see the main 8100/8300/8800 forums as there are several threads regarding SD card capacities, what works and what doesn't, etc. - I don't keep tabs on that scene beyond a cursory knowledge.

I used a SanDisk | Home 4GB microSDHC for the 8830 worked great.
