Default Odd Address Book syncing issue with Missing Sync

Please Login to Remove!

I've been using Missing Sync for months with good luck and the occasional hiccup (BB 8320 on T-mobile). As of last week I've started noticing some odd occurrences. I've had some contacts deleted from Address Book on my Mac (although they're still present on my phone) and I have also had some duplicate addresses come up on my Curve.

I enter birthdays in the appropriate contact field and they get put directly into iCal from the Birthday field of Address Book. I started missing birthdays and noticed that the corresponding contacts were getting deleted from Address Book.

I've tried restoring Address Book from a backup, deleting the sync files in the library, then overwriting the device, but I get the same weird issue upon the next sync. One thing I thought it had to do with MyFaves at first, but I'm quickly finding out that there's no real pattern, I'm randomly having contacts deleted from Address Book. Any thoughts or ideas?

Thank you kindly in advance, cheers.

Yea I was having that problem with my Storm the other day. It take me a few hours to figure it out. What I did was overwrite my contact list on the blackberry with the one in my address book. After that, if I got any duplicates, I would delete the original contact on the phone and keep the duplicate. That way it wouldn't delete any of my contacts in my address book. Thats how I fixed the problem after awhile, and so far i have not had a problem since.

Thanks so much for the response CAsurfnlax, much appreciated. I actually wasn't able to delete the duplicate contacts from my Blackberry which was really odd. I had to go through and manually enter the contacts that were on my phone and not in Address Book on the Mac (I had tried sending the cards as attachments to my Mac from the Curve, but wasn't able to open them).

So I ended up backing the Blackberry up on an old PC laptop I have, wiping the device, and restoring it and now it seems to be fine. Now I just have to backup Address Book on a daily basis I guess, what a pain.

Well, that lasted all of an hour. Back to square one, Address Book contacts still being randomly deleted. Using Mac OS 10.5.5 and BB OS 4.5.0.81 in case that helps anyone in diagnosing what's causing this. Thanks in advance

I can't offer any solutions, but have been having the same problem over the last couple of weeks. I just purchased a blackberry curve (8330), and was having troubles with pocket mac. Tried Missing Sync with much more success, until this problem came up.

okay recently i got the problem again and contacted mark/space and this is there reply:

Jason,

This is something we've had reported previously. It's been found that if you modify a record on the handheld it is removed from Address Book on the next sync. We have a workaround that seems to have addressed the problem for most who have tried it. But being a top priority our engineers are investigating ways to ensure the problem doesn't keep coming back. The workaround is:

On the Mac go to 'System Preferences' > 'Sharing' and check the option for Bluetooth sharing. Then open the Bluetooth preferences on your BlackBerry and pair the device with your Mac. Once the device is paired, again on the BlackBerry bluetooth screen, select your Mac and press the Menu button, select Transfer Address Book. This will send the BlackBerry address book to the Mac as one vcard file. Then import the vcard into Address Book to see how many cards there are. That should have all of the cards from the Blackberry.

With all the cards on the Mac now you'll have duplicates of many. In Address Book, click on the 'Card' menu and choose 'Look for duplicates'. Then once you merge the duplicates your data should be all on the Mac. Now, to resolve this and prevent it from giving you problems, backup your data, wipe the PIM data on the Blackberry, and then have the Mac overwrite the handheld. The in-depth steps for doing this are:

- Go to iCal, click the 'File' menu and choose 'Backup iCal
- Go to Address Book, Click 'File' menu and choose 'Export - Address Book Archive'
- Go to Mark/Space Notebook, click 'File' menu then choose 'Back up Notebook database'.

On the Blackberry:

1. Go to 'Options'
2. Go into 'Security Options'
3. Go into 'General Settings'
4. Press the Blackberry 'Menu' button
5. Select 'Wipe Handheld'

Now you should reset the Sync History of Notes plugin and set the other plugins to overwrite the handheld on the next sync. If you don't, when you sync all of the data will be deleted from iCal and Address Book and Mark/Space Notebook. To reset the Sync History of the Notes plugin:

1. Go to Missing Sync, click the 'Help' menu (NOT the icon) and choose 'Reset Sync History
2. Uncheck all boxed except the one for the Notes
3. Click the 'Reset Sync History' button
4. Now double click on the Notes plugin and make sure it's settings are correct.

Still in Missing Sync, double click on the Contacts plugin and make sure it is set to overwrite the handheld on the next sync, and do the same thing for Calendar and Tasks.

Now sync.

I also put in a service ticket and the response I received from was extremely frustrating and not terribly helpful. I had actually tried the steps above (twice as the same random deletion issue recurred) before submitting the ticket. In response to my ticket, I received a link to a ridiculous work around from Mark Space which included the following:

"IMPORTANT: This performance issue may resurface following any contact data being edited or added directly on the BlackBerry device. Mark/Space recommends that users add or edit contact information only on the Macintosh, pending a permanent, comprehensive solution to this issue."

I find losing nearly one hundred contacts absolutely unacceptable. Also, not being able to update a contact on the phone is a major issue for me.

Although I never thought I'd do it, I actually picked up an iPhone to see if that was a viable option as I've always thought of it as more of a toy than a business phone. I've got to say that it certainly solved my syncing issues and I won't be losing any more contacts (also, it features quite a few useful applications).

Admittedly, I cannot type as fast on the iPhone but the keyboard is quite good and it meets my needs. A bit of an extreme resolution, but the alternative of very wonky software, lost contacts/appointments, and poor customer service is not worth the ability to type a bit faster to me.

I hope you have better luck than I. I also recommend that anyone using MissingSync and a BB with OS 4.5 or a Bold check their contacts as this is a known issue according to MarkSpace's Knowledgebase.

I only found out because I missed an important date that was stored in one of my contact's fields. That led me to further examine the issue I realized that I'd lost nearly 1/4 of my contacts.

Yeah I'm having this issue as well. Very disappointed with Missing Sync. They need to get their stuff together pretty quick. It's a bit aggravating as a Mac user that there are no viable solutions to sync your data reliably, even if you pay. I really hope RIM ships Desktop Manager for Mac very soon.

Check out our Missing Sync for BlackBerry 2.0 beta preview. This has numerous fixes for contact syncing and added features.

Go to the markspace forums for more info.

Default Missing Sync needs serious work

You know what would be great? Instead of coming on BlackbBerry forums and wasting hours of our time with temporary fixes, wouldn't it be nice if Missing Sync actually FUNCTIONED PROPERLY? Yeah, it's better than PocketMac, but for cryin' out loud, if I'm paying for it, it should work, right? I've had it for a year and I'm really, really tired of consistent issues with Missing Sync. I'm starting to believe this program is created/updated by some high school kid in between biology classes.
