I got prompted about 20 minutes ago.
version 1.0.1 (build 2)
Not noticing the differences, although my birthday calendar still will not sync.

The birthday calendar likely won't ever sync, as it is just displaying info from birthdate information stored in the contacts records.

contacts sync so why shouldnt the corresponding info?

When you sync contacts, you are syncing the birthday info (if it is saved in the contact record). The birthday calendar in iCal is a special calendar that references the date information in the contact records and is nothing more than that.

For example, if you try and create an event in the birthday calendar, you get this warning:

You can’t add or change events in the Birthdays calendar. Events in the Birthdays calendar come from your contacts in Address Book. To change them or add birthdays, use Address Book.

Apple's own mobile me won't even sync the birthday calendars.

with the update the sync issues seem worked out. Mine is working perfect now.

Exactly. The birthday calendar is not a "normal" calendar. It won't sync because it doesn't need to. It is only displaying data pulled from the contacts records.
