Hmm. I can't think of any reason why things wouldn't work once you've gotten an IP address from T-Mobile. Your IP and gateway look right - maybe you're being assigned a bogus DNS server?

Default No response to 4 echo-requests

All,
I took a stab at getting this up and running tonight. I just got my 8100 this afternoon and am loving it so far. I have however run into a snag trying to get it acting as a modem.

I followed all the directions specified on ggoodale's site, setting the apn, cid and what not. The devices are paired properly, and it seems to connect to the device but times out after a given interval. The timeout appears to occur whenever I try and utilize the connection.

It chokes on the line "No response to 4 echo-requests".

Also, when the script is executing I get a popup terminal window that says "OK" with a continue / cancel button. didn't know if that is normal or not. this is all on a macbook.

An excerpt from the log file:
------------------------------------------------
Mon Oct 9 23:09:38 2006 : Connecting via BlackBerry 8100.

Mon Oct 9 23:10:54 2006 : Connection terminated.
Mon Oct 9 23:10:54 2006 : Connect time 1.2 minutes.

Thanks for the script, instructions, and any help in this matter

Thanks,
-Jay

Glad it's working for you! Speed is directly related to signal strength, so I wouldn't expect to get full EDGE speeds with 1-2 bars.

The popup terminal window suggests to me that your ppp options are set incorrectly. Does your Bluetooth connection show up in System Preferences -> Network? If it does, select it and click the 'Configure...' button. Click the 'PPP Options...' and verify the settings are the following:

* All Session Options are unchecked.
* Send PPP Echo Packets is unchecked. (I have it checked and have no problems, but others have reported success with this turned off.)
* Connect using a Terminal Window is unchecked.
* Prompt for password after dialing is unchecked.
* Use verbose logging is checked.

If your Bluetooth connection doesn't show up in the Network preferences pane, you can get it to show up by selecting the Devices tab in Bluetooth preferences, selecting your 8100 from the list, and clicking on 'Edit Serial Ports'. Pick the Serial Port with Dialup Networking listed in the service column, then check the 'Show in Network Preferences' checkbox. (You might want to check that the port type is set to Modem while you're there, too.)

Hope that helps! Let me know if you find a solution and I'll post it on my blog as well.

Glad it worked out! I'll include those instructions on my blog as well - a number of people were having the same problem. Hopefully it'll help them out as well.

If you haven't already, restart Internet Connect. If that doesn't make the script show up, I'd recommend rebooting your Mac - it's not clear what exactly makes new scripts show up in the list.

I just hit 226kbps on the speed test. Fantastic.
Upload is slower than hell though: only 8kbps

Thumbs up Works like a charm

Thank you ggoodale for this info!
I just set this up on my Mac Book Pro and it works like a charm. At first I had the 'other side not responding' issue, but after following your tips to get fix that issue, I have not had a problem since.

I am a Cingular user and am connecting via wap.cingular

Download Speed: 192kbps
Upload Speed: 8kbps

I do have a question which maybe someone could address. I am on the unlimited Blackberry Personal Plan ($29.99/month) and am just curious if this connection is going to be seen as a different type of data stream by Cingular, and will be charged as regular data transfer (as in not covered in the unlimited plan).

I just remember that when I used to connect through WAP before I had my blackberry, I used to get nailed with some pretty hefty data transfer charges and just want to make sure that won't start happening again.

Any reassurance (especially by Cingular customers) would be appreciated. Thanks!
