Won't affect anything. Feel free to turn it off to save your battery.

That's the current state of affairs with most American carriers' version of OS 4.2.1. You can pull the battery on your phone briefly to solve the problem. I'm working on a better solution.

Question 08-20-2007, 10:00 PM

Hi:

I been trying to get this to work for me. I followed the directions in this thread. I am using a TMO pearl, os .96 and a new macbook. Everytime i try and connect I get a "connection error, please check settings."

Does the script in this thread still work? I cannot figure this out..

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think I figured out part of the problem. I copied the script into my library then in the modem scripts folder. However, when I go to select it from my drop down list, its not there??? What gives? Thanks

A couple of things to check:
  • Did you copy it into the Modem Scripts folder off of the root folder of your hard drive? There's a Modem Scripts folder in your home folder as well, but putting the script there won't work. If your Mac asked you to authenticate when you copied the file, it's in the right place.
  • Did you download the script using 'Save As' or 'Download Linked File', rather than clicking on the link and saving the resulting page? Mac-formatted text files aren't handled very well by most browsers.

The script did authenticate, however, I think I opened the script then did a "save as." Maybe that is the problem. I will check when I get home tonight and post back. Thanks Much!!

I downloaded the linked file, took out the .txt, moved it into the modem scripts folder with the system X folder and the script is still not showing up in the modem drop down list??? This is driving me nuts.

Have you tried rebooting? Ridiculous, I know, but for some people it's the only way to get the Bluetooth Preference Pane to acknowledge the script's existence.

If that doesn't work, check the permissions on the file - According to Get Info, it should be owned by system, but everyone should have read access.

still no dice... regarding the permissions, the first one is: You Can: "Read Only"

Owner: "System"

Access: "Read Only"

Group: (What do I put in here?) There is a drop down list...

That should be fine. Group permissions shouldn't matter. Hmm. You've stumped me. Let me dig around a bit.

Default With TIM in Brazil - can be disconnected by mobile handset type? - 08-30-2007, 02:56 PM

Hi,

Please, I followed the instructions on Use your BlackBerry Pearl as a Bluetooth Modem under OS X - Fibble.org and "almost" worked.

I used to have my Nokia 6131 as bluetooth modem with my MacBook and it was great.
Tried to do the same with my Pearl and I got this:

Thu Aug 30 15:46:44 2007 : Connecting via BlackBerry 8100.
Thu Aug 30 15:46:44 2007 : Making EDGE connection.
Thu Aug 30 15:46:47 2007 : Serial connection established.
Thu Aug 30 15:46:47 2007 : Using interface ppp0
Thu Aug 30 15:46:47 2007 : Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cu.Bluetooth-Modem
Thu Aug 30 15:46:48 2007 : Remote message: tim
Thu Aug 30 15:46:48 2007 : PAP authentication succeeded
Thu Aug 30 15:46:49 2007 : LCP terminated by peer
Thu Aug 30 15:46:52 2007 : Connection terminated.
Thu Aug 30 15:46:57 2007 : Serial link disconnected.

I called TIM in Brazil and they said that the service is not available for BlackBerry yet.

Question: is this possible?
If the Nokia 6131 worked, the same must happen for 8100, I guess, or am I wrong?

Thanks,
Fabio

Hi Fabio,

If you haven't already, try turning off PPP Echo Packets as described in the blog post you linked. Also, check to make sure you've got the right APN set up in both your phone and your Mac.

If neither of those work, turn on Verbose logging (also described in that blog post I believe) and post another log snippet - I'll see what I can do.

I just joined here. I have been pulling my hair out ovet this. I had it done with my BB that I bought back in December. I just got a warranty replacement and it only works once at a time.

From what I've gathered, it's because of the OS on my newer BB. It's running v4.2.1.96 It seems that in order for the bluetooth modem thing to work, I have to pull my battery out every time I want to do it.

Is there a fix for this problem? Is there a way I can downgrade to the older version of the BB OS so I won't have this problem? HELP!!!

Currently, there's no fix. However, you can downgrade your OS. Check the sticky thread over in the 8100 forum about the latest OS version for instructions on how to do it. You'll have to track down a copy of an eariler OS release though.

Angry Cingular-ATT change? - 09-11-2007, 01:05 PM

I used the instructions here and was successfully using my pearl to connect through Cingular/ATT (though I would get kicked off if it was idle for more than about 60 seconds). About a week ago, the connection really bogged down a few times. I tried rebooting the computer, then eventually I got the same "A modem error occurred. Please verify your settings and try again." each time I tried to log on. I wonder if ATT might have changed something with this access....

I have:
Blackberry Curve (8300)
OS 4.2.2.89
Macbook Pro w/ OS 10.4.10

I'm seeing the same problems as others. After resetting the 8300 (remove/reinstall the battery), I can connect ONCE. On that first connection, I get about 30 seconds of data to transfer successfully and then everything appears to come to a screeching halt. Once I disconnect, if I try to reconnect without resetting the phone, I get around 10 of the these errors:

sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xdb6e9932> <pcomp> <accomp>]

and finally:

LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests

And then the script attempts to disconnect, which also fails:

Mon Sep 17 23:59:08 2007 : CCLWrite : +++
Mon Sep 17 23:59:11 2007 : CCLWrite : ATH0\13
Mon Sep 17 23:59:15 2007 : disconnect script failed

I do have the unlimited data plan with tethering option from AT&T. I can successfully use the 8300 tethered on the same Macbook running Windows XP Pro (using bootcamp) so I know the phone and data plans are working right.

Hopefully this information will help someone more knowledgeable figure out how to get this working on the Macbook.

Thank you!

Red face Can't do it... - 10-02-2007, 02:23 AM

First of all, I'm with T-mobe's.
Secondly, I'm runnning OS 10.4.10 (MacBook).... and I don't really know shizzle about Mac's.

1st try: Followed instructions to the best of my abilities, opened Internet Connect, and got the message: "Could not establish a connection with PPP server," or something like that. Send PPP echo packets is unchecked, Use Verbose logging is checked, and I tried countless times to connect with no success.

Quickly browsed the thread to see what I've been doing wrong...
Saw something about "Authenticating" the file to put it into the Modem Scripts folder. Didn't "Authenticate" nothing when I copied the Blackberry 8100 file into the Modem Scripts folder. Then I noticed another Library folder in the System folder, which contained another Modem Scripts folder. So I moved the Blackberry 8100 to the System folder, then I "Authenticated" the file; then I tried to move the file into the Library folder, it wouldn't let me do it because "The library folder cannot be modified," or something to that tune. Am I going in the right direction with this?

Sorry this post is so wordy, but...
Am I doing this right at all?

Yes, you are. I'm not sure why it won't let you put the file in that folder, though. Do you have to type a password to log into your mac after rebooting it?

I too am having this same problem.

I have a Curve 8320 /w T-Mobile. I'm using the script and followed all the directions (APN, guest/guest, etc.)

I can successfully connect and authenticate and can browse the web on my MBP for about 30 seconds before I get nothing. The connection DOES NOT drop, it just stops receiving/sending anymore data.

To successfully reconnect again for another 30 seconds, I must reset the phone.

Any ideas someone?

If you're using a Pearl, search the forums for information on the TIM Italy firmware release. It gives you most of the good features of 4.2.1 and works flawlessly with tethering.

Sorry, but I don't know anything about O2's firmware for the Curve. If it suffers from the same flaw as T-Mobile's most recent OS, then you're stuck I'm afraid.

Default pearl connection quit working! - 11-13-2007, 10:19 PM

I don't think I'm an idiot but I could be. My old pearl worked flawlessly to connect to the internet then my trackball quit working. TMobile sent me a refurb now I can't get it to work for the life of me. It connects for a minute then disconnects. Come to think about it my internet is significantly slower on my phone since I got this phone. My software is v4.2.1.107 platform 2.3.0.83. My Mac is running 10.4.10. If any one has any suggestions let me know.
Thanks
Mark

The new T-Mobile OS for the Pearl has a known issue with tethering to a Mac via Bluetooth. There's no fix at this time.

Yes, detailed in several places around the forum. A quick search should turn up the relevant posts.

Would you perhaps provide a link and/or specific OS version number? I'm not trying to be lazy, just not finding what I'm looking for... anywhere...

Wonder how I missed that...

Have you tried the .168 version or just .102?

If anyone is wondering, .168 didn't work for me, but .102 works as advertised, for now. Thanks ggoodale. I guess this is the last time I'm changing OSs on my Perl.

Default My SpeedTest - 11-29-2007, 09:23 PM

I finally got it connected. I'm an idiot. I keep trying to connect high speed on my settings but once I switched to dial up it worked fine.

I did a SpeedTest from SpeedTest.net and I'm on T-Mobile with the Blackberry 8100 and these are my results:

Download: 332kb/s
Upload: 10kb/s

I can't complain. That's around 6 times faster than a dial up connection. The thing I'm amazed at is now I can connect where ever T-Mobile does. So fetching sweet.

Duplicate post, but I wanted it in this sticky:

Finally got my 8130 pearl to tether with my leopard mac using Verizon as well. Took me 3 days of messing with it.

I installed the script as listed elsewhere on the forums. Then paired the bluetooth. The next trick was the settings for the bluetooth device.

When I go to configure this device, I get the option to use connect to the internet with your phone's data connection- that's checked. No other options.

For phone vender, I have no verizon option. Also, no RIM option with this script- the old script gave that option. I chose "generic".

For model I have the following options: bluetooth LAN access, dial up device, or GPRS (GSM/3G). I used "dial up device"

username I have my
password: vzw
phone number: #777

Then I restarted the phone and the laptop and I'm online. Verizon said it couldn't be done!

I believe most recent versions of OS X shipped with a 'Sprint PCS Vision' script that should work with your phone as well (I used it successfully with Sprint's 8830, and Sprint's connection settings are identical to Verizon's I believe).

I too have been trying to tether via bluetooth in Leopard to no avail. I tried with the settings you used and rebooted both devices and still no luck.

I think the problem is that I am never actually able to get past the part where the bluetooth setup assistant hangs on "Configuring Serivices" it doesn't matter if I check or uncheck to use my phone to access the internet, it just hangs. - See this thread for more info.

Apple - Support - Discussions - BT Setup Assistant Hangs "Configuring ...

When I click connect it almost instantly says it can't connect, it doesn't even try. I also noticed that it pairs with my phone but won't actually "connect". The blue light comes on then goes off. This is likely due to the fact that I cannot complete the BT setup, it gets to the "Configuring Services" and just sits there for hours.

Apparently I am not the only one. Maybe it has something to do with the "Customized" Leopard installation I performed - no additional language packs, no printer drivers, just the base files and X11 IIRC. ?? Ideas, anyone?

Which version of OS X? You should be able to tether with the built-in PCS Vision script on Leopard and Tiger - the phone number is #777. Search the Mac forum; there are several posts with the info you need.
