Default Updating 8100 OS update for Mac Users? - 12-12-2006, 01:10 PM

Is there any way for a Mac user to update the operating system with PocketMac? I'm a Cingular user and they just released the latest version of their operating system. Ideally, I'd like to update to the latest version and keep current... or at least know that I can.

I am currently encountering two problems..

1) The file on the RIM website is transferred to me as a .exe file. I don't have bootcamp or parrallels. Is this .exe just a self-extracting compressed file... in which case maybe I could just have a friend execute/extract/uncompress and then zip up the files and send them to me...

2) No knowing what comes out of that zip -- does PocketMac even support updating OS..? I know there is an option to install a program but I suspect installing a game of solitaire and an update to an OS are (potentially) very different operations. Can anyone confirm that installing an OS update though PocketMac is possible?

Thanks all!

No, at the present time you'll require a PC or PC environment. If you have an Intel Mac use BootCamp, if not you'll have to use a work or friends PC.

Is it possible to update by using Virtual PC? I successfully downloaded and installed all necessary programs and files but BlackBerry Desktop Manager kept saying "Device Not Found" even though Virtual PC recognizes the BlackBerry as a USB device :(

no, for some reason virtual pc will not recognize the blackberry. I've tried several times myself. I'd recommend using a work pc or finding a friend willing to let you install the bb software and use their pc for the update. The bb software is very easy to uninstall afterwards.

It is also *possible* to upgrade the OS via Parallels on an Intel-based Mac. The process can be a bit nerve-wracking, however, since Parallels tends to recognize the Pearl at least as a 'RIM storage device' after initializing the device but before loading any of the Java modules. If you don't manage to toggle the USB settings at this point, you will end up with a device that displays a 543 error until you manage to get the modules loaded later.
