Lightbulb Vodafone Today White on 8300 with 4.5 OS - 05-15-2008, 07:17 AM

After I originally received my curve and unlocked the vendor themes, I have used the Vodafone White theme almost exclusively. Something about it just works perfectly for me.

Last week, I installed the 4.5 OS for the curve, only to find that my Vodafone White theme was no longer there. My first attempt at getting it onto my phone was by putting it on using javaloader and using the original .cod file that I used with my 4.2 OS. Although it worked and loaded, whenever the handheld would be reset, all of my icons would be rearranged to their original locations, and all hidden icons would be shown again.

This was frustrating as I usually have very few icons on the main page. This method obviously hadn't worked quite right, so I set out to find a better way of getting my favorite theme.

Last night, I decided to look into my Blackberry.alx file, and low and behold I find the following:

Quote:
<!-- Vodafone filesets -->
<!-- 8300 and 8320: only Green -->
<fileset series="8300" GPS="~True" Colour="True" Java="1.0">
<files>
net_rim_theme_120_green_320x240_b.cod
</files>
</fileset>
<!-- 8310: White and Green -->
<!-- 8800 and 8820: only Green -->
<!-- 8100: White and Green -->
<!-- 8110: White and Green -->
<!-- 8120: White and Green -->

(The <fileset series="8300" line is slightly modified in this as this shows it with the _vendorID field removed. Sorry for not having that there.)
This told me basically everything I needed to know. Apparently the White theme was made for a curve model, only not my specific model as of yet. Possibly they do not have an updated theme for it yet, but nonetheless I found what I was looking for. There was still a White theme for some model curve, so I set out to find and use it.

As shown in the alx file, I needed the 8310 operating system to get access to the 8310 White theme. So I downloaded the 8310 OS and installed it onto my computer. I then went to the folder where all of the .cod files are kept and copied the Vodafone Today White theme one into my 8300 OS's folder.

I am running a Vista Business OS. My file location for all of the .cod files is this: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8300-v4.5.0.10_P2.7.0.40\Java". I know a lot of people have trouble finding some of these files, and it took me awhile to find them all too. Your Blackberry.alx file should be located at: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files" and then inside of the folder there for the OS you are currently running on your phone.

Next, I modified my Blackberry.alx file to show the following:

Quote:
<!-- Vodafone filesets -->
<!-- 8300 and 8320: only Green -->
<fileset series="8300" GPS="~True" Colour="True" Java="1.0">
<files>
net_rim_theme_120_green_320x240_b.cod
net_rim_theme_120_today_320x240_b.cod
</files>
</fileset>
<!-- 8310: White and Green -->
<!-- 8800 and 8820: only Green -->
<!-- 8100: White and Green -->
<!-- 8110: White and Green -->
<!-- 8120: White and Green -->
I saved the file, copied it to the folder, plugged in my Curve, and opened Desktop Manager. It found a change in the Core files and asked to update. I hit ok and watched it copying the modules to my phone. After it restarted, there was my Vodafone White theme just as I had always liked it, and it has worked perfectly thus far.

This procedure has worked for me so far, although I am not sure what the repercussions may be of using an 8310 theme on an 8300. Maybe nothing will happen, and maybe something bad will happen, but it is worth it to me to use my favorite theme.

This same procedure may be possible for some of the other model phones as well. As evidenced by the .alx file, the 8800 and 8820 phones will not have the White theme as a default either. This same method may work for you guys as well.

Good luck!

Please do not ask where the OS itself came from.

I don't want this thread locked and I want people to have a method if they need help or are having trouble. Asking where I got the OS will just get this locked, and it has been made more than clear in many threads by the mods that they will not allow people to answer it, which I believe is the right stance.

As I said in my original post, I haven't had one problem with the theme yet.

I don't know what the differences are for the CDMA model phones though, so I am not sure who could help you answer this question.

Wirelessly posted

I did the above things to get the voda white theme. Worked perfectly. However it won't work with the sprint theme. I used the .cod file from the 8330 os and copied and pasted the sprint fileset text to the appropriate area in the 8320 alx. When I plug into dm in doesn't show as needing a core update. I can use javaloader to load it but like the thread starter I hate having to rearrange my icons everytime I reset. Any ideas. Please pin me with any direct solutions.

I am not really sure what differences the CDMA themes would have, if any. I am not sure why it would not load the theme onto it.

Are you sure everything is spelled correctly in the alx file? I have never tried the conversion to CDMA. Maybe someone that has can give you guys a good solution.
