Talking Download torrents directly to your blackberry - 12-18-2008, 04:42 PM

I recently discovered a way to bypass the 5mb download limit download torrents on my blackberry 8800.

Basically it goes like this.

You first must have opera mini installed on the phone. Opera Mini | The most popular mobile phone browser in the world

I noticed with the newer version of opera I can download songs larger than 5mb and that instead of downloads invoking the OEM browser opera downloads the files itself.

Now You need to use the website torrent relay Torrent Relay - Download torrents online (web client)

How it works is you find the torrent you want to download enter the url into the wbsite and it dwownloads it for you.

After it is done it gives you a link to download the file voila!!

To make things eaiser you can enter a torrent id from torrentreactor. As far as private trackers I don't think there is a way to use them so you are only limited to open trackers. But hey, torrents on a blackberry and many other smartphones is pretty cool.

Thank you for sharing. Torrents format well. However, they are known to bring virus and other sorts of unwanted cyber items.

Blackberry viruses are non-existent. Besides that the workaround is designed mainly for grabbing a few songs on the go.

I don't wanna get into the whole torrent-virus arguement. But I use bitorrent 24-7 and am a member of several elite private trackers. The only time i've gotten a virus was from the pirate bay, and if I read the comments I would've never dl'ed the file in the first place.

I'm just happy opera lets you download large files now. The 5mB limit the oem browser has is ridiculous.

I'm not slamming torrents, as each person has to make their own decision, just as I am sure there are a lot of those who have used it flawlessly.
As for me though, I wished someone would have warned me about viruses, adware, spyware and the such when I first used it. Long story short, I lost the entire contents of my PC because I got a virus and had to sacrifice everything to save my computer.
Caution is advised to anyone who uses torrents.

Peace,

Kamau

Good find. Not sure I'll ever use it, but it's nice to know the option is there.

I've never had an issue dl'ing torrents, but my AV and firewall has always been updated and turned on and I usually stick with the more well-known torrent sites and torrents that have a lot of seeders and leechers. The few people I know that have had problems were those who either didn't have up to date AV protection, or had it turned off for whatever reason.

Indeed, caution is a must for anyone using torrents. I've seen dozens of people with viruses from using torrents.

Having an updated anti-virus and firewall are good, but nothing can protect 100 % because new viruses are created and released faster than the anti-virus companies can keep up. Fortunately there have not been any known viruses for the BlackBerry to dated.

Quick question. I take it that using Opera Mini I can download files from lets say rapidshare, speedyshare & the likes onto the micro sd card regardless of the file size right? Would be really handy considering ide then just have to transfer the files via usb onto my pc. (ps. Haven't tried it out yet since ime gettin a Bold tomorow. Was waiting for the Curve 8900 but Vodafone doesnt have EDGE here so it seemed pretty daft considering ide have to use GPRS.. :/ )

Might sound daft but ime mostly referring to downloading over wifi when it comes to larger files. Spend a lot of time on my home pc downloading new releases and would be quite handy to have these download onto my phone when ime somewhere with a wifi connection. I take it its quite touch & go even with Opera Mini? :/
