I'm just going to create this thread as a repository for updated versions of the BlackBerry.alx files. This thread will contain the files for all 32MB and 64MB devices, including the 7100 series (GSM), the 7100i, the 7130e, the 7250, the 7520, the 7290, and the 8700 series (and any future handhelds). These files will simply add the ability to install all vendor-supplied theme files available with the applicable OS installation package. I will attempt to keep it updated with the latest installations from the various carriers.

* Note: I will be monitoring and keeping this thread clean of almost all questions. I don't want to have another 10 page thread concerning 'is this compatible with that' and 'i did this but now my phone doesn't work anymore - please help'. This thread is meant for people who know what they are doing, plain and simple.

* Note: On 4.2.1 and newer versions of the handheld code Cingular (and a few other foreign carriers) have decided to "hide" the icon for Blackberry Maps. Included in the attached Blackberry.zip files (where appropriate) an edited LBS.alx has been added. Simply replace the LBS.alx using the same procedure as for the Blackberry.alx. LBS.alx is located in the same folder as the Blackberry.alx. Doing so will add the icon for Blackberry Maps.

* Note: After you've added all the themes most people end up with one or two they really like and don't use the others. With all the memory issues with the newer 4.2 devices I recommend removing unused/unwanted themes after this procedure. The easiest way is to simply remove the .cod's from the java directory for the unwanted themes. I suggest moving them to another folder so that you can move them back should you decide you want a particular theme back. Once you remove or add one from the java folder simply run through Application Loader and it will update the device. For more info Click Here.

* Note: I have also included a modified Platform.alx file. This is for Cingular users with PTT service enabled on their accounts ONLY. If you are not a Cingular customer and do not have PTT enabled on your account, do NOT use this modified Platform.alx. The instructions for installation are the same as the BlackBerry.alx file. This *should* allow the installation of the PTT software on the handheld. As to whether or not it would work, that's up in the air.

* Note: I have also included modified Platform.alx and LBS.alx files. The modified Platform.alx file is for Cingular users with PTT service enabled on their accounts. If you are not a Cingular customer and do not have PTT enabled on your account, do NOT use this modified Platform.alx. The instructions for installation are the same as the BlackBerry.alx file. This *should* allow the installation of the PTT software on the handheld. As to whether or not it would work, that's up in the air. The modified LBS.alx is for Cingular (and a few other foreign carrier) users only. This will enable the use of BlackBerry Maps with your Cingular-branded device, rather than opting to purchase TeleNav from Cingular (*mutters* greedy bastids).

Intended Purpose: This will be a one-stop thread for those users who are a tad bit more advanced than most users on here (no offense to the technically-challenged BlackBerry lovers). I know that I spend a lot of time downloading, installing, and uninstalling various carrier installations of the 'latest and greatest' OS software. Each time, I lose the edited BlackBerry.alx file and have to do it all over again.

Serious Warning: This is not a thread for 'How do I...?' questions, so please don't use it as such. I will try and outline what to do, to an extent, but nothing after that point. If nothing else, this will be my own personal repository of these files, which I'm sure a few others will likely end up using as well. If you do not know what a BlackBerry.alx file is and you do not understand what to do with it, please do not ask in this thread (however, I would suggest that if you are curious, search the forum and find out what its used for in relation to themes ... you may find that you have a use for it).

Likely Side Effect: If I keep this list up-to-date (which I likely will so long as I don't get too busy), it can be used as a list of the latest OS upgrades available, as well as various other 'valuable' information.

Instructions: Again, this is only for those who know what they are doing, who are fairly active in the 'upgrade-hungry' scene, have upgraded their OS plenty of times from a carrier not their own, etc. If you are not applicable to ALL of those descriptions, or you simply have no intentions of aspiring to the geekdom that some of us reside in, then click on your browser's BACK button and exit this thread.

1 - Do your normal Backup, if you choose to not lose everything in the process (I will assume you are familiar with the process if you've chosen to move on forward with Step 1, so I won't elaborate any further).

2 - Download and Install the latest OS version for your handheld (if my list is NOT updated, then do NOT use the BlackBerry.alx file I have provided - a simple PM to me with a note concerning the updated version will be sufficient for me to update my listings above). The download URL is provided above under each device/series, listed as Installation Download.

3 - Delete the Vendor.xml file from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader (this needs to be done AFTER Step 2, although that should not need to be stated).

4 - Rename the BlackBerry.alx file located in your Installation Path (see above for full path name; varies for each handheld software installation).

5 - Download and extract the BlackBerry.alx file from the associated ZIP file for your handheld. This is listed above as BlackBerry.alx Download.

6 - Open Desktop Software 4.2 and upgrade/update your handheld.

I have added a note in the first post about removing unused themes. With the newer devices (8100, 8300, 8800, 8830) there are issues with memory allocation. When free memory gets too low the device will begin to delete emails, sms, and call logs. This can obviously be undesirable. Some of the vendor themes are almost 1Mb in size each and can take up considerable space.

Here is my suggestion:

Remove unwanted themes by simply removing them from the java folder. The java folder contains all the .cod's that get loaded to the device. Remove the unwanted .cod's and place them into another folder somewhere. Once you've removed the themes you don't want, simply plug in the device and run through application loader. It will remove the "unrecognized modules." If you want a theme back simply put it back into the java folder and do the same.

Personally, I have removed all the themes except the TMobile zen and the today plus (downloaded from BlackberryHELP.) I even removed the TMo faves app which gets loaded with the edited .alx's (even if you're not on TMo.)

It's just another way to free up memory to assist in the quest of no more deleted call logs/emails.

Theme .cod's are listed as:

The numbers below are the vendor ID's for each carrier and will help you identify which themes are which:


You can safely delete any of the below vendor-numbered themes. The size listed is an average size for that carrier's theme. As you can see a couple of them are quite big.
