Default different ringtones for different callers? - 05-25-2006, 05:46 AM

I have an 8700v on Voda in the UK - thanks to all the help on here I've managed to transfer an mp3 to my phone and i was wondering if its possible to have different ringtones for different callers?

If it is I can't see how to do it. If I view a contact then there doesn't seem to be an option.

Am i being a thicko or is it not possible? (thicko probably)

and i did a search before i asked!!

figured it out - use profile exceptions

I'm not entirely sure about the 8700, but I would assume it's the same as other phones with 4.0. Under profiles, go to "Use Active Profile Except For:" Click the wheel, and choose "New Exception". In the "Exception:" field, choose a simple name for the exception. In the "From:" field, choose "Add Name", andpick from your address book. Then scroll down to "Custom Phone Tune" and choose your ringer. Save and exit and you're all set.

Just because it's possible...that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

It's actually quite easier than that.....

-Go into ADDRESS BOOK.
-Find the contact you want to assign a custom ringtone to and OPEN IT.
-Click the TRACKWHEEL and choose EDIT.
-Click the TRACKWHEEL and choose ADD CUSTOM PHONE TUNE.
-Choose the RINGTONE you want to assign to the contact.
-Click the TRACKWHEEL and choose SAVE.

After using this method, can you later go in and edit it to change the "Use Profile" to anything but Normal? If so, what OS and theme are you using?

Thanks for your Help.

I'm not sure I follow?

Do you mean can I switch profiles? Like from Normal to Vibrate?

Yes.

I'm using 4.1.0.309 and the Zen theme.

Hmmm...I never noticed that in the menu before.
Thanks.

Not really, in the exception, there is a field called "Use Profile". When I use the address book method to add ringtone, the defaults to "Normal" and on mine I can't change it. This means the exception will always use the normal profile, not the active profile. In other words it won't follow the active profile, but will always use the custom ringtone, even when that could cause problems.

If I create the exception in the Profiles and add a contact, I can set the "Use Profile" to "Active" or any other profile. If set to avtive, the exception follows what profile I have set as Active.

Hope that's clear enough.
Thanks for your Help.

So are you saying if you have your phone set to the VIBRATE profile (which all alerts and sounds are turned to vibrate) and a call comes in from someone who you have a custom ringtone assigned to it plays the ringtone?

That's what I thought but apparently it does whatever it is assigned to do, whether it is vibrate or quiet, but that's on my phone and I have 7105t.

Yes, if the Use Profile is "Normal" that's what happens. When I originally set up custom ringtones from the address book it didn't follow the Profile setting, I E it wouldn't change from Ringtone to Vibrate when I changed my Active Profile. I went in to edit the exception I noticed the Use Profile was on Normal and couldn't be changed.

I had also set up one for multiple contacts using the Profiles add exception feature. This one had the Use Profile defaulted to Active and it followed my active profile. So now I don't use the address book method, only Profiles Add Exception. I had to delete all the ones I has set up from the address book, because I have situations that must be only Vibrate for all calls.

Hope this helps.

It must be a software thing then.

I just tested it.

Switched to VIBRATE profile and then dialed my BB from my home phone (I have a custom ringtone assigned to my home number.)

All my phone did was vibrate.

Must be, originally using 8700/4.1.0.194 from Cingular and now 8700/4.1.0.286 from O2 England and it still doesn't allow changing from Normal. What does your Use Profile say?

Thanks for your Help.

I would normally tell you to search before posting, then post a link, but even searching wasn't necessary. At the top of the page where you found this thread is a long sticky thread about 7100 series ( but not 7100i) ringtones. Look Here.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Greenberg, I searched around the forum and finally found your answer, I knew someone on here would have it for me.

Does anyone know how to do this for the 7100g? None of these suggested options are available on my phone.

That's because you are not running v4.1

If you look in Settings / Options / About you'll discover you aren't running 4.1. Distinctive ringtones are only available in OS v4.1

I have tried all ways to do this but it still does not work correctly. I stopped trying but would be nice for this feature to work.
