8700g Zen Theme Home Screen Message Notification -
06-02-2006, 02:21 PM
First of all, yes, I searched, and couldn't find anything addressing my question. I have unlocked the Zen theme on my 8700g and I love it, except for one thing. There seems to be NO notification of new messages on the home screen, without having to scroll and highlight the mailbox icon or SMS icon. Aside from the red light (which seems to revert to green) there is no way to know when a new SMS or e-mail is waiting when just looking at the home screen.
Once I scroll to the appropriate box, the name popup will show "GMail (2)," for example, indicating 2 new e-mails. That's great and all, but I want to know I have e-mail without having to scroll down to the icon in the apps menu and reading the name that displays. I don't like having to unlock the keyboard to check if I have something new.
Is there really no way to do this?
Once I enter the mailbox or SMS messages views, the top part of the screen enlarges and shows an envelope with a red star on it. There HAS to be a way to have this envelope pop up on the home screen, say - where the voicemail icon pops up. I hope I am wrong on this...someone please tell me if I'm just being too dumb to find this option.
BTW First Post...

Wow, I can't believe I'm the only person that's brought up this issue. Even if it doesn't differentiate, at least SOME notification that something's come in, without having to unlock the keypad and scroll, should be available. I've switched to the vodafone theme because of this. I really like it, minus the fact that I'm picky and don't like seeing vodafone and T-Mobile on the same screen. Oh well...thanks for the reply.

Hmmm, on my Zen theme, I get a number indicating how many messages I have and a red mark showing that I have mail. This pops up next to both the SMS icon and the main mail icon. I can always tell when I have mail. I also get little envelopes on the top left with red marks when new e-mail comes and the same on the top right when new SMS comes. These little icons appear where the little VM "tape" indicator appears. Am I missing something here? Do you not get this?

Okay, I went back to the Zen theme to double check, and it's now doing what you describe, but only for SMS. I see a red star on the SMS icon, plus a (1) to the left. I KNOW that last night, someone sent an SMS and it didn't do it, and I had to scroll to see what had come in, and was a little annoyed. I don't know why it's working now.
However, for the mail icon (I have it set for GMail in my BIS settings), it still won't show a notification on the home screen. When I have new mail, I have to scroll to the GMail icon and only then will the "GMail (1)" popup tell me I have mail. The only time I get notification is when the keyboard is locked, then I get the two icons (one for SMS, one for GMail) in the top where the "T-Mobile" text is usually located. It seems that on the home screen, the "T-Mobile" text banner is replacing the message icons. My voicemail and missed call icons move to the bottom left near the profiles icon.
This is nice since the SMS icon works correctly, but not so nice since the GMail icon does not. The "Messages" icon works correctly too, but I don't use that because I like to keep SMS separate from Gmail. Anyone else experiencing this or is it mine just acting up again?

I don't have BIS 2.0 on my Rogersaurus account but this problem is not too surprising. The specialised Zen theme has substituted 'active ribbon icons' for the notification icons that other themes use (although you still get those notification icons from within the Messages app.) Those notification icons in other themes are also only showing your SMS and main messages boxes. What you want, active ribbon icons for BIS 2.0 special email folders, is probably beyond what you can expect for a while. When BIS 2.0 becomes more universal, the themes may well catch up.
Also worth remembering that Zen hasn't even been officially released.

Yup, I just figured that one out. Since I only have GMail on it, and therefore don't need to use the "GMail" special folder, I moved it out and moved the Messages icon into the home screen. Now it works fine. I should have just done this in the first place, I didn't know it was known that BIS special email folders behaved like that.
Thanks for the help!

I had the same problem.
I didn't know that zen seperated the emails and the sms, so it worried me.
but now its working fine, I just hid my BIS account.
