Try saving your image as a .gif it will reduce the file size and often (depending on the image) will not ruin the quality to the point you no longer want to use it.

i'm actually using photoshop 7 and save as a jpeg and also reduce the size to the lowest possible which is what definitely changes the quality of the picture. the size that i try to save it as is 240 x 260 and then select "low" when saving. i've also reduced the actual size as well. I'll take your advice and try saving as a .gif and see what happens, thanks!
