thanks! I tried Seabyrd's conversion software and it worked great. Glad I don't need to purchase yet another piece of video software to add to my huge collection. Now, if only I could find one that does everything.

Thanks for all the information posted here guys, very useful...As is the Blackberry video convertor... Nice..

Being new to video on BB (8300), I have had a couple of problems.

I subscribe to DL.TV podcast, and tried to convert this using the utility but get lip sync issues. It works converting the geekbrief podcasts.

Can anyone suggest how to resolve this? Thanks.

Try all the formats that DLTV offers. If you find one that will convert well, just go to the episodes page and download that type. I recommend the plugin "Down them all" for firefox. That way, you can just go to the episodes page and type in the extension and it will grab all the episodes of that type. I don't think that the .divx will work, I tried to make one and there were some odd issues with the resultant video.

Thought I would just pop in here let folks know that I found a solution that works for .tivo files using the app mentioned here and one other.

Here is the link to my post

Maybe this was already figured out but I was unable to find a workable solution until I did what's outlined in the post.

Thanks to the creator of The BB Vid Convertor and to the makers of DirectShowDump for this solution.

Bacon,

Any way to somehow integrate DirectShowDump with BB Vid Convertor for us Tivo freaks?

DirectShowDump has a command line utility that you could probably fire off to convert the video from .tivo to .mpeg before doing the normal conversion which your software does now. You could only fire this off when/if the input file had a .tivo extension.

For Tivo freaks this would make your software a one step conversion of .tivo files to the Pearl.

Either way, thanks for the great package you put together so far!

Default DVD to BB, Start to Finish - 05-01-2007, 11:19 PM

For an almost totally free way to pull any movie you want, try the following:

Acquire
DVD Shrink (current version is 3.2 I believe)
AnyDVD (trial is free but only good for 30 days I believe)
PocketDivX Encoder
Mplayer

DVD Shrink will rip the movie to your system in one of several ways. I will give instructions momentarily. AnyDVD does the decrypting. It is $35 and worth it. With AnyDVD and DVD Shrink, you can back up any DVD you own. I am not suggesting anyone do anything illicit. It is legal to backup movie titles you own so this post is based upon that assumption.

1. With AnyDVD running in the system tray, you can start DVD Shrink.
2. Click on the 'Re-author' button (if you want to get everything including menus, use Full Disc but note I have not tried menus on the BB)
3. Double click the movie that is presumably in your DVD-ROM (make sure you have the DVD Browser tab selected)
4. Double-click the main title. The main title is usually fairly obvious to discern as it is the largest, labeled as such, and under the 'Main Movie' section.
5. Select the 'Compression Settings' tab
6. If this will be for the BB, drop the Automatic video down to Custom Ratio and move the slider as fat to the left as possible.
7. Deselect any of the audio and subpicture items you don't want. I usually leave only the English 5.1 selected.
8. Click the 'Backup' button
9. In the 'Target' tab, ensure the drop-down is on Hard Disk Folder, choose the correct output path and ensure the 'Create VIDEO_TS ...' checkbox is selected.
10. The other tabs should be okay as you are not burning. (If you have a newer version of Nero, it will sync seamlessly with DVD Shrink and write straight to disk if you choose).
11. When you select OK, the rip will begin.
12. When it finishes (15 minutes normally), you will have the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders created.
13. Run PocketDivX Encoder
14. You should have a bar pop up that has a bunch of different devices. I suggest you select the far right which I believe is Home Theater. It changes the movie te least which is good as the Mplayer will shrink everything to the proper size.
15. Each area in the setup has a number. For 1, click on the left button (browse) and change to details view then navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder and select the largest .VOB file which should be your primary movie file.
16. For 2, you have to select the browse button in order to change the output path.
17. For 3, I always max the audio and video qualities and leave everything else alone.
18. Click the Encode Now button and wait (30 minutes approx)
19. The Mplayer settings I use are a combination of previous ideas in this thread. I made the batch file with the contents:

@echo off

echo %1

C:\mencoder\mplayer\mencoder.exe -vf scale=240:-2 %1 -o "c:\Videos\small\%~n1.avi" -of avi -ofps 24 -ovc lavc -oac lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=230:acodec=mp3:abitrate=64

PAUSE

20. The path to the application will change based on your system as will the output directory. You can play with the scale but all my movies are wide screen and the ratio above shows the entire movie with 0 distortion.

21. You can drag the .avi created with PocketDivX Encoder onto the icon for the batch file and it will run for about 20 minutes or so.

The resulting file will be the one you move onto your BB. This is working great for me and takes you from start to finish. I hope this helps.

I just run AnyDVD and use mencoder to do the rest. It usually only works on store bought DVD's and not burned ones because usually when you burn one to a blank DVD the software will compress it. I use the following command in my batch file:

C:\Progra~1\MPlayer\Mplayer\mplayer\mencoder.exe -vf crop=432:324,dsize=4/3,scale=240:180 dvd://1 -dvd-device D:\VIDEO_TS -o "C:\bb\dvd.avi" -of avi -ofps 24 -ovc lavc -oac lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=230:acodec=mp3:abitrate=64

Note that I have included a crop feature to crop to full screen without stretching the video. Some movies don't turn out too well with the sides chopped off. You can change it according to the pixel ratio of the movie.

Default How do you handle the multiple VOBs? - 05-03-2007, 08:58 PM

I tried going straight from AnyDVD but I always have multiple VOBs. Do you just let it make movie part1.avi, part2.avi, etc?

My program will stitch multiple vob files together. Instructions are in the help file detailing how to stitch files together.

Angry A windows script to batch convert an entire directory of videos - 05-10-2007, 12:18 AM

i whipped up a quick wsh script to convert an entire directory of videos for viewing on the pearl. it's great if you want to copy over multiple episodes of a tv series or just want to convert your video collection. i've tested this on this 8100/pearl and 8800. it works for avi and flv (youtube) files.

it uses mencoder, so if you want to play w/ some of the encoding settings, edit the transcode.vbs file like so:

1) to change the video bit rate, change vidbitrate=230 to something like vidbitrate=400 (the recommended setting by rim). you can do the same for the audio bit rate (abitrate).
2) to change the frames per second, change the -ofps 14.985 setting. 24 looks pretty good for me, and the UI remains responsive.
3) the -af volume=10 setting jacks up the volume by 10 dB. this is great for the ny subway. turn it down if you want to or leave it out completely.

Has anyone tried to do a season disk for a show with episodes? I tried to do one and all I got was the first episode? Did I miss something?

Is there a very simple way to convert a dvd for play on the pearl. I have no trouble ripping and schrinking dvd's for backup, but this has been giving me fits all day.

I've used procoder, and I made an AVI file. Of course the thing is playing faster than it should, not sure what to do about that, trying xmpeg now.

Then I try to use super or blackberry video converter and they just die when the encoder screen comes up.
