If you're not trying to convert encrypted DVD's why not use the Roxio Media Manager in the new Desktop Manager 4.2 SP2. Works quite well.

Ok. Well media manager works like a charm (even in Vista) for me for any normal videos but for some reason I can't get it to convert over the .tivo files. I have tried using the Direct Show Dump utility but i can't get it to work in Vista. I thought media manager was supposed to be able to just drag and drop to convert tivo files for my blackberry or am I asking too much and need to go find a different way to decode the tivo files in Vista before using media manager?
I have also tried using the Dump Show then media manager on my XP PC but the manager can't find the decoded tivo files on that one.
Please help.

Thanks for this nifty little utility, it works great. One little problem I'm having with the DVD functionality: lots of my ripped DVD's don't follow the "VTS_01_01.VOB, ...01_02.VOB, ..." format. Example, I have a movie where the video is actually in a "VTS_02_01.VOB, ...02_02.VOB, ..." list. I've even seen a few movies with a "...01_01.VOB, ...02_01.VOB, ..." list of video files. Looks like your utility is hard wired to the first type of video file list.
Also, for anyone wondering if you can use this program program on DVD's ripped to a hard drive, you can, you need to use the DOS "SUBST" command. Example, if you have a folder on your C: drive with ripped VOB files called (for example) "C:\My Movie\VIDEO_TS", you can map a drive letter from the Command Prompt as follows:
subst x: "c:\My Movie"
BBVC will then see "X:" as a DVD drive and automatically find the VOB files in the VIDEO_TS folder (VIDEO_TS is mandatory for your VOB files).
HTH.

ok, this is wonderful if you are using windows!! Here's the kicker... I'm running linux ubuntu. I have mplayer and i can start a terminal and do everything like you say, replace <input file name> with <BrianDoesHollywood.mpeg> and <output file name> with <BrianDoesHollywood.avi> (of course the paths are part of the filename, such as /media/sharedmedia/movies/BrianDoesHollywood) and i get an error saying that the avi file doesn't exist. When i change the .avi to .mpeg, i don't get an error, but i don't get results either... What to do?

It makes encoding a DVD so easy! OMG this frontend is the, opps, can't say that.
gchez, poke around a bit. I hadn't used it before and it's pretty intuitive.

encoding vide with mplayer -
08-17-2007, 02:37 PM
Not to familiar with programing. Would like to know what I need to insert exactly into the command string because I have tried replacing the input string with the name of the file but it keeps telling me that the file is not found. What am I suppose to replace the input and output with? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Seriously where is the support for this Topic? -
08-25-2007, 10:53 AM
I'm new here and now Im thinking about leaving this forum...It seems to me that no one truly wants to help others if that person is not programer smart . There are several post from members here that are frustated with the details of how to encode videos to BB or how to watch movies on the BB or what products are needed to add/watch movies on BB's. Basiclly what apps that you know will work ?
My thought is for those that are able to view movies on your BB, its nice huh? Well other BB owners would like that option to, with some help from other members that have successfully added movies to there BB..

I understand your frustration with this. It took me 6 times of reading through this thread back when it was only 6 pages long to figure out how to encode the video using this method. There are some other methods out there now. You can try Roxio media manager to copy videos over. Roxio will automatically convert them. However, it won't work with encrypted DVD's. That's where the information in this thread comes in. However, IMO, it's not worth the time spent to figure out how to do it using this "programming" language and then spend many hours encoding the video. By the time I had encoded the video, chased volume problems, chased audio/video problem like sound not in sync with video, I could have watched the movie on my computer.
I did a trial of this software (not free):
SlySoft CloneDVD mobile | DVD to PSP, DVD to iVideo, DVD to ZEN
It worked quite well for copying DVD's into BB format as well as iPod format. Simple to use and was quite self-explanatory. I never purchased it and the trial ran out, but it worked very well. I probably will purchase it since my daughter keeps harping on me for more movies on her iPod.
I know it's extra money spent, but for me it just wasn't worth all the extra time spent on these other methods.

simple gui for mencoder.exe -
08-29-2007, 12:04 AM
I wrote a simple GUI program for mencoder.exe. This may help some of you who are having issues. I haven't tested it extensively, but it does the job for me.
The program was written in C# and requires the .net framework 2.0

Looks like you're forgetting to use quotation marks.
C:\Documents and Settings\Jamie\Desktop\300.avi
should be
"C:\Documents and Settings\Jamie\Desktop\300.avi"
this also applies to your output file name if you have spaces in the destination, i.e. the argument after -o. 300.avi is fine since there are no spaces in the argument. Also if you're trying to output to the same dir as your original file be sure to name it differently than the original.
Did you happen to try that frontend I wrote? Good luck.....

You need the video file you want to convert in mplayer folder, mines is in c:\program files\mplayer
This is what i exactly put in dos:
C:\program files\mplayer>mencoder -vf scale=320:240 RobotChickenPS3.avi -o temp.avi -of avi -ovc lavc -oac lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=230:acodec=mp3:abitrate=64
then press enter
the video file in the mplayer folder is RobotChickenPS3.avi and it will comeout as temp
it took me 6 tries and i wasnt familiar wit dos but it works great and you can adjust the ratio and the vid quality also. I have a 4gb and i want to fill it up.

This isn't true. Below is an example of using a file in a different directory than mencoder.
CMD Window:
C:\mplayer>mencoder -vf scale=240:180 "F:\South Park\Season 6 (DVDRIP)\610 - Bebe's Boobs Destroy Society.avi" -o "J:\Bebe.avi" -of avi -ovc lavc -oac lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=320:acodec=mp3:abitrate=64
mencoder can also be called from any directory such as:
F:\>"c:\mplayer\mencoder" -vf scale=240:180 "F:\South Park\Season 5 (DVDRIP)\514 - Butters' Very Own Episode.avi" -o "J:\Butter's Episode.avi" -of avi -ovc lavc -oac lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=320:acodec=mp3:abitrate=64
Good luck everyone

Ive tried the mencoder software and have used it several times with different results. It seems that most times i get the same result however: The video looks great and the sound sounds great also, but they aren't lining up correctly most of the time.
Lately i noticed when i download youtube vids or something of that nature from keepvid, and try to convert it, the video seems to run away from the sound so to speak. Basically the video speeds up away from the sound. Any way to correct this? Thanks
Chris

Is there a way to make the movies play in full screen instead of like half the screen showing the buttons and the rest. That's one thing i would love to be able to do on my BB - watching something in full screen. Thank you.

I use "CloneDVD Mobile" from SlySoft ( www.slysoft.com). It works way faster/easier/reliablerer than any other video convertor I've tried. Currently on my BlackBerry Pearl using a 4GB MicroSD memory card I have 30 full length DVDs (movies only, no menus) and still have plenty of room for more. Using CloneDVD Mobile I can rip a movie to a single .AVI file in under 30 minutes. This program is so simple to use too! I used to use the SeaByrd BlackBerry Video Convertor and what a hassle that program is. Trust me, if you try the CloneDVD Mobile program you'll uninstall any other program. I think the trial is good for 15 days or so, but there are ways around that too.
I also have to say thanks to "John Clark" and "San Francisco" for providing a lot of helpful info. I wouldn't be using a 4GB card in my Pearl if it weren't for them.

b4d4ms, It says CloneDVD is based on the mencoder project which Seabyrd is too.
Can you provide filesize of one of your movies and length of movie?
I will try on one of my movies and see what the results are.
Later in the day ...
Movie - Meet The Fockers - 1 hr 55 min.
SeaByrd - 226 MB
CloneDVD - 190 MB
Took about the same length of time.
May have to watch the video to see what difference in video quality looks like. If I took the slider bar from default of 23 to about 27, it matched what Seabyrd makes.

This sounds so easy, but how were you able to do this in SeaByrd? Others have also written about how they used BBVC to copy commercial movies to their BB, but I was under the impression that it won't work with copyrighted DVDs. I tried it on MY OWN store-bought copy of This Is Spinal Tap and it wouldn't work.
I was able to have SOME success using a VOB file from a decrypt of Super Troopers, which I also own, but it was only one of four files and so I ended up with a really nice first 20 minutes of the movie (unfortunately, in French). It looked and sounded good on my Pearl, but I haven't yet figured out about how to combine VOB files into one for conversion to BB.
Help! I have tons of movies I would like to be able to convert for use in my down time. I'm not a programmer, but I am pretty savvy when it comes to computers.

Look up six posts (#471) for a DOC file that I created. I created instructions with pictures. Maybe that would help.

Yes, I saw it and printed it. It's great, but I don't have an answer to the fundamental questions of whether it will work with a copyrighted DVD and, if not, how to make it work with multiple VOB files.
It seems to me that in BBVC, you either have to choose the whole DVD option or the individual files option. When I chose the whole dvd option, the process failed. When I chose individual files (from a decrypt), it handles only one file at a time. True, this worked with a 20 minute clip of Super Troopers, but how do you get the whole movie in one file?
I remember reading on this thread somewhere that you may be able to fool the program into reading the folder with the multiple VOB files as a DVD drive. Has anyone done this and had success? Also, does this overcome the encryption problem?
Any help will be appreciated.

I'm not sure what to tell you. I also did the trilogy of Back To The Future. I simply clicked the "Click here to turn on DVD Options" under the input tab and left the title number at 1.
The DVD had the following file structure off the root.
\VIDEO_TS
\AUDIO_TS

Hi,
I have been reading through the post and I am still confused. I am using the bbvc but it will convert some files but not others. But what is weird is that they come from the same source. They are tv episodes and it will convert one episode and on the next it will say error writing file exiting... has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks for any help.
