Pearl WEB YouTube Converter -
02-13-2007, 07:16 PM
I have to teach tonight, but when I get back I will post a review of the BlackBerry WEB Video Generator.
It works fine. It basically eliminates the step of having to save the YouTube URL, download on one of the many free sites and then converting.
You simply enter the YouTube URL in the BBWVG field and press the convert button.
The program then downloads the video from YouTube and converts it for the Pearl, all in one process.
Works well.
Bye for now.

Downloaded BBVC and it quickly converted most of my personal videos of the kids. Nice
I then popped in the matrix dvd, and started the BBVC. It reconized the dvd and started the process. I watched it for awhile and it was erroring quite often. 'Duplicate Frames' and other errors I dont recall. Once the BBVC was complete it saved the file to my laptop then I put it on the Pearl. It was horrible and was only 4.86 megs. Do I need to do more to convert a DVD other that hit the start button?

Sounds like that DVD is encrypted. My program will not decrypt it for you. You will need to use another software to decrypt it to an .avi first and then use my software to put it on your pearl.
Thanks for using it!

Anyone? What do you use to decrypt the DVD before you Pearl-ize it?

I am having a problem encoding a video onto my Pearl. I have followed the steps using SUPER and everything appears to run smoothly but then when I connect my Pearl to the computer and enter Mass Storage Mode then go to media manager, the media card is not recognized, just the device memory.
I tried not entering mass storage mode and the media card was recognized, so I put the encoded video on my pearl and tried it but it said the format was not supported even tho i believe i followed all of the steps correctly.
What is the problem?
These are the steps I used:
Output Container= avi
output Video codec=H.263
Aspect=11:9
Frame/sec= 14.985
Bitrate kbps= 576

Why are you trying to do this manually?
Read this thread and download Bacon's FREE video converter. [see the link contained in his signature].
End of problem.

I've been using Blackberry video creator. is awesome, easy and great quality, still uses the memconder and eliminate the DOS steps, averythin is donde through windows. I like it a lot. still haven't figure it out the DVD functionality right, but I have Ricki Bobbi on my pearl directly from the DVD, I try another movie and didn't get it right, I'll get it.

You need to specify the output folder [where to put the encoded files] otherwise Super C buries them into its folder.
Anywhere on the interface right click the mouse.
Scroll to and highlight "specify the output folder"
Left click with the mouse.
The folder menu will open. Select where you want to save the files.
Make sure to click "save settings."
Bonus Tip: I have most any work I do saved to the Desktop, then I move it from there into whatever folder I want.
Default saving to Desktop is handy because I always know where my work is saved rather than having to go look for it in whatever default directory Programs decide to put something.

which solution are you using?
BBVConverter (you tube (flv) works)
BBVGenerator (you tube (flv) doesn't work according to San Francisco)
Mencoder (you tube (flv) should work)
Super (don't know)

Use the search feature for BBF to find the answer as this has been discussed in many threads, starting 5 months ago.
Short answer: no.

Well, pretty skimpy with the info, you are.
I suspect you are trying to simply play downloaded FLV [YouTube] videos?
You can't do that. You have to convert the FLV files into Pearl format. In fact, with all videos you have to convert them to play on the Pearl.
The good news is that the converter program is FREE.
All you have to do is install the free BlackBerry Video Converter program, see link within this thread, select the FLV YouTube video for conversion, load the converted video on to the Pearl and play away.
Bonus Tip: Read this thread, will save you a lot of time in wondering why things are not working. E.g. discussion about having to convert FLV files is in here and elsewhere on BBF.

Ok, I'm a self-described DUMMY when it comes to software stuff. (I work in HARDWARE R&D.) I just downloaded Bacon's converter (BBVC) and converted my first movie and dumped it on my Pearl in under 5min. This is the BEST and easiest to figure out program I've ever seen. Even a DUMMY, like me, can use it!
You get a donation from me!
Well done sir!
Well done!

2. Super with recommeded AVI settings. Output file size: 19,787 kb. Quality score: 80%. Slightly less grainy than 3GP. Acceptable.
3. Mplayer encoder with Zro's recommended settings. Output file size: 22,880 kb. Quality score: 95%. Larger screen size. Only a bit more color depth would make this encoder perfect. Best in class.
In all 3 cases, sound and video were a perfect match.
Remember, these file sizes are for 10 minutes of a movie.
Doing the math... for storing more than one full-length movie on a 1GB card, assuming you want to leave space for plenty of songs, you'd need to decide whether to encode 2-3 excellent movies with MPlayer, or 3-4 acceptable movies with Super.
Storage v/s material quality... hmm...
Here's hoping they release the fix for the 2GB card soon!

Awesome! Very glad to hear that you like it. It is my first software project ever and the response has been great - a super motivator.
I have just released the 1.13 pre-release version (1.13.0.6). It includes the ability to set individual settings (directories, color, etc), support for the 8800, and a file transfer browser to make it very easy to put files on your Blackberry!
Thanks again,
B
*EDIT* Thank you very much for the donation!!!!

A BBF Member e-mailed me and asked why he could not convert his DVD files. He said the "IFO" files would not convert. Just as a side-note since this is not my massive "how to" video I am producing [should be a 1/2 hour show]:
"IFO" files are NOT what you convert, it's the "VOB" files. See pic. Versioned Object Base [VOB] files contain the actual video and audio. IFO [or Information] files simply contain chapter info, etc. That is why they are very small compared to the HUGE VOB files.
Also, keep in mind that if you are trying to convert your DVD movies into Pearl format you are going to need an unlock program such as AnyDVD [see other post where I link to it].
You do NOT need an unlock program if you are converting "home DVD recordings" made with your DVD recorder, such as TV programs.
You need the unlock program to get by your DVD movies protection, that is, the "lock" put on by the studio to prevent illegal copying. [Making a copy of legally owned DVD movies is NOT illegal, but I will spare explaining the law on that].
Side Note: Why are my VOB files in the below pic so small as compared to DVD movies, that are typically 1GB or larger? Simple, the DVD I pulled out of the DVD recorder and put into my PC's DVD drive had some five minute news clips I was recording off the TV news. In other words, they were not movie chapters.

Help! Mencoder Questions -
03-04-2007, 12:35 AM
I got a pearl yesterday and i really want to find the power of video playing on my phone. So I used Mencoder to covert the movie, but it could not play. In the start it displayed with Loading and suddently showed with Error. I have tried many times even change the video bitrate to low.
REM WinMEnc encoding
mencoder.exe "E:\movie\Rocketman\rocketmana.rmvb" -srate 44100 -vf-add scale=240:135 -ofps 15 -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=32:mode=3 -ovc lavc -ffourcc DIVX -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=200 -o "\rocketmana.DivX.avi" 2> 2.txt
Is there any mistake in the process? Anyone could help me?
Thank you so much...

I moved your post to this thread. Have you read through this? I know it's long but it will help tremendously. I had to read the entire thread three times before I got it figured out.

Ok, the BB video creator is awesome but I have 1 question so far. All of the files that I converted from "The Ringer" work but 1 and I can't get it to not be in Spanish. The clip itself works before I use the video creator but after that its always in Spanish. Any ideas? Thanks guys.

Make sure you have version 1.13.0.7 (get it at my page if you don't already have it, I have not yet posted it to the file repositories)
Did you check English on the Language Tab?
If that doesn't work just click the available languages button and follow the instructions to determine what the name for the English track on your file is (assuming that it has one)

Audio not syncing -
03-07-2007, 05:02 PM
I have used KeepVid to grab some videos from YouTube, I have then used baconismidog's program to convert the FLV to an AVI for my Pearl.
But when I do, the audio gets "trimmed" at the beginning of the converting and the end result.... the audio is plays faster than the video.
Can anyone help? Do I need to do something in the "Advanced" tab of baconismidog's program?

.FLV files have a variable bitrate. As far as I know there is no way that mencoder can compensate for that. You might try one of the online converters to get the .flv into an .avi, then use the BBVC to convert that .avi into one you can play on your Blackberry.

Cropping Video? -
03-11-2007, 08:55 PM
Does anybody know if there is a way to crop a widescreen divx avi to make it the 4:3 aspect ratio needed for the pearl without stretching the video to that size?
Edit: I have found out that mencoder can crop. I am trying it right now with an office space movie. I'll let you know what I find out.
EDIT: It worked great. I included this in my command statement for mencoder:
-vf crop=560:576:80:0,dsize=4/3,scale=320:240
where crop=width : height : x : y (without the spaces)
x and y are for the area you want to crop. Default is centered.
I'm not too familiar with it. Maybe somebody that knows more can fine tune it for those of us who want to try this. I'll mess with it some more and let you know what I find. I'm suprised this hasn't come up yet.
***EDIT***
I think I have kinda figured it out. Instead of using the numbers above, look and see what the pixel ratio is for your video file. For instance my original avi file of Office Space is 704x384. I wanted to crop the sides off to make it a 4:3 ratio. So i tried to find what number would give it to me, 384 divided by 512 is 0.75 which is 4:3. So I used the following command leaving the x and y part of the crop command blank, which centered the cropping in the middle of the video. It works excellent. I love it. No more stretched image.
-vf crop=512:384,dsize=4/3,scale=320:240
So now I just go in and change the numbers for the crop to adjust for different dimension sizes of different avi files. My complete statement in my batch file is as follows:
C:\Progra~1\MPlayer\Mplayer\mplayer\mencoder.exe -vf crop=512:384,dsize=4/3,scale=320:240 %1 -o "C:\bb\%~n1.avi" -of avi -ofps 24 -ovc lavc -oac lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=320:acodec=mp3:abitrate=64

maybe its already been asked or mentioned somewhere but.....
is there anyway to rotate the view of the video? i go through tons of paper work on the job and am able to prop the pearl on its side. it would be easier for me to watch videos like this instead of trying to stand it up against something
if not, then its gravy

BaconIsMyDog, Do you think maybe cropping of the video could be worked into a future version of the Blackberry Video Converter? That would be badass.
