i saw the new format... nice... but my account is gone... do i have to reregister? and sometimes i make a mistake on uploading but i can't delete what i have uploaded... is there a way around that...

and this one is for the people who have the sites up... is there anyway to sample the tones without going through with the bb browser? i mean those rings on the http://luckyluciano.completelyfreeho...rtal/index.php site seem cool but going through each one will take forever... and a simple description like "150" or "aint" doesn't really tell much

Submit any song and its turned into a ringtone and sent to you. Load mp3's if you want, it will then be converted and hosted for you.

Well, at this moment you can't delete what you've uploaded. The unmodified version of that script tied the user name to the uploaded file, and you were able to delete or edit your own files. However, I ditched their upload script and wrote my own, and I haven't really looked into how to get my script to attach the user name to the file. But, my script forces you to enter an artist and song title, which makes the file names a lot more descriptive. If you upload "150.adp," enter "theme" as artist and "sanford and son" as the title, it'll rename the file to "Theme - Sanford and Son.adp" and move it to the S-Z directory. So it's a trade off at this point.

As for previewing a ringtone, it's really difficult since I can't even find a Windows application that'll play them. And I'm not about to reencode every file and list it twice.

AWESOME! This breathes new life into my 7100g...Thanks to the profiles, I have an "annoying" profile for these ringtones since I wouldn't dare use any of these at work at the risk of being mobbed by my colleagues.

So far I have "redalert" for Level 1 messages and "You've got mail" for regular messages.

Did anyone else notice that these things play LOUDD!!!!! on the 7100? I was kinda blown away at first

Yeah, they are a bit loud. And since the volume difference between "medium" and "high" on the BB is huge, you're kinda stuck with really loud ringtones. On medium I can barely hear them, on high they can be a *little* too loud.

I assume this is like the AOL guy saying "you've got mail"?

Can you post this one? I would like to download this and use it since I use my blackberry for AOL mail.

But having the statement "MP3/CD-quality voice ringtones" is a bit misleading. You are an audiophile, c'mon. haha. this is nowhere near MP3 quality much less CD-quality (perhaps a 32kbps mp3, at best).

If you live in America, I would advise not to put up a site with the downloads. Full audio ringtones offered over the net would actually violate copyright laws, in addition to the DMCA directly (and likely some newer, less vague laws).

As an online forum, you are technically designated as an OSP (online service provider), and the proper, LEGAL protocol (in America, atleast) for the MPAA, the RIAA, etc. to approach you (BBF.com/BBC.com) concerning copyrighted material, links to copyrighted material, etc. is to mail (should be postal with an official letterhead, either of the company, the organization, or their lawyers) requesting the removal of said copyrighted material and/or link to copyrighted material.

I had a pretty good friend go to federal prison a few years back for modchips (you may have read about it in the news, but i won't mention names), but his forum and website were the main focus of the investigation and the motivation of the other charges (you know, like Al Capone was charged with tax evasion because they couldn't pin him for the far worse charges) - he pretty much summarized it quite well about what his responsibilities were and what liabilities he was protected from. I don't think laws concerning forums and online communities have changed much over the last few years in the liability sense...

This last post is very true. I wont even begin to speak about all the cases i have had with dealing with Nextel and ringtones.....

Basically... without artist permission... blah blah blah... hence why some providers do not provide mp3 ringtones... at least not anything worth listening to... they dont want to pay artist royalites.

I once asked Fabolous (yes, that's how he spells it) how much he gets from Nextel... he said as much as 5 to 10 cents.... (amazing since the ringtones costs .99).

haven't really used atmosphere yet, since my band's really just basic rock'n'roll, but i've been thinking about doing an ambient CD, and selling it at the spa my wife works at...

Well, I've shut it down for now at least. I figured that I don't need to draw the attention of the RIAA just so some people can download ringtones. The site will still be up, but just for my use and a few others. If anyone wants the scripts to host a site of their own, let me know. I think it worked great (auto sorted and renamed files based on artist name and title). Just needs a bit more tweaking.

Everything sounds like garbage on the BB speaker anyway, so even if we were able to play higher quality audio files it wouldn't make any difference.

i'd like to, but i'm a student with a part time job and a blackberry data plan. i can't afford to shell out for hosting. perhaps one of my more munificent compatriots would oblige?

I am the General Manager of a music publishing company, and I can tell you that technically it is illegal to post any kind of copyrighted music ringtone, even if you post only 5 seconds.

As far as royalties, the government set statutory rate in the United States is 8 cents per copy/download. Meaning if you want to distribute someone else's work, whether on compact disc or by computer download, then you have to pay the publisher that royalty. That covers the publishing rights if you have your own recording, such as a MIDI file you recorded yourself. If you want to use their recording as well, then you must get permission and negotiate a seperate royalty with the record company or the owner of the recording.

That said, I doubt anyone is going to come looking for you if a few dozen people on a forum are passing around ringtones. However I wouldn't go around and start posting that web address in many forums or allow the catalog available to grow too large. On this level, your crime would be comparable in seriousness to the crime of jaywalking or littering. And the only party who would be liable would be the website owner/administrator who is hosting the ringtones, not those downloading or the forum where the web address is posted.

some friends of mine are drum & bass producers (170bpm electronic music), in addition to having their own rock bands. one of them fuses electronic music (not the sappy stuff you hear, but more along the lines of dark glitch IDM) with their rock (post-production). its quite interesting, to say the least.

You may know the answer to this then. When I buy a CD (and yes I still occasionally do despite the exorbidant price) Do I purchase the medium or the content. If its the content then am I allowed to transfer that content to any medium for my own private use? IE: I own the cd - turn it into an mp3 and then into a ringtone.

Yes, that is correct. But you are not allowed to distribute to others.

hey... i don't know if anyone else has had this problem... i've got a 7100t with all these ringtones on it... last night i was trying to back up my phone and i would get this error way in the beginning saying data not recognized by handheld... so then i tried a hard reset... and it took forever to boot back up but it finally did... then i tried backing up and it worked... but now when i try to set a ringtone... instead of the usual sample of each tone when i scroll, i get silence... so far the only way i've gotten it to play anything at all is to go to profiles and "show tunes" then "play tunes"... nothing else works... like when you change the volume from low, medium, high... it used to play at each level.. but nothing... and it's doing it to all the tones even the regular ones on the phone... i tried my alarm.. and it doesn't work...

i need help.. this is getting frustrating.. i've tried another reboot and still nothing... phone doesn't even vibrate .. but i can make calls just fine...

I would try reloading the OS on the phone. Sounds like something got corrupted.

Now if you all can put your heads together and come up with a plan on how to attach pictures to your contacts....so that we may be completely happy with the phone..

I tried a hard reset - worked ok - took some time to load the music player but then was fine.

this upload script is a bit too strict, lucky... i've got a (homemade) ADP file (heh... i useta work for ADP... ;) that definitely works on my phone, but your upload script calls it too big.

i've thrown kewl.ring.noise.1.adp and kewl.ring.noise.2.adp up on your site... i'm ready to throw kewl.ring.noise.3.adp (124 KB = 127,329 bytes) up there, as soon as your script is ready to handle it...

(i've also emailed all three files to hiroll3r, as his upload script told me they weren't ADPCM files.)

lucky, the max OTA file size is 128KB (instead of 120KB as someone mentioned earlier), although i've read that the limit has been lifted for cod files that aren't parent cod (similar to a zip file).

Same thing happened to me. Everything was great, then I got a Java Exception. No ringing or vibrating, and when I looked in profiles there were NO tones and nothing to select. I rebooted a dozen times after deleting various things w/ no change, would always get the Java Exception error at restart. I restored from a backup (first time) and all was well after the restart. I'm now loading my new ringtones back in.

Sorry i've been missing for awhile, pretty crazy weekend. Anyways, the script now accepts files that are up to 128kbs. I should be making a bunch of changes to the site shortly, and I might even host hiroll3r's script.

OK, for anyone that's been trying unsuccessfully to upload to my site, problem solved. It worked fine with Firefox (which I use), but not IE (which I don't). So, to make a long story short, I never knew it was broken ;)

Here's a tip for better quality ring tones. Edit the volume embedded in the file so that it doesn't max out. Once it's on your phone it's still pretty loud, but just not as distorted. I usually knock it down about 12db.
