Pearl Custom Ringtones -
10-08-2006, 06:48 PM
Ok I just purchased a Tmobile Blackberry Pearl. I am trying to assign Custom Ringtones to Individuals in my Contacts. I am able to select the tone and set it however the Pearl wont ring that tone when that person calls, just rings the default ringer I have set. I called Tmob and they transfered me to RIM who says its a software issue and will be coming out with a new release in a few weeks to fix the bug. Is this true can anyone help me work around this or do I need to wait for the update.

I had that problem also. After you set the ringtone, try a battery pull and see if that fixes the issue.

Are you using the original OS from T-Mobile, or have you upgraded to the Rogers OS?

Read through the thread for the instructions. Pretty easy and no wipe is necessary.

Well, I'm not sure what else to tell you. I simply went into my contacts, added the custom ringtone and saved it. If you are doing all of that already, then I stumped on why yours is not working.

That is probably the best idea.
When you have exhausted all of the options get it switched out.

So you've gone to Profiles, then <Menu> New Exception and named the exception, added the name(s) of your contact(s), clicked Custom Phone Tune, picked a tune and saved the Exception and nothing? I've had my contacts with custom ringtones from day one and not one problem, if your exceptions are set correctly then yeah, you might want to switch phones. I have my ringtones saved in the phone's memory btw.

Setting a Custom Ringtone -
10-12-2006, 01:27 PM
I have about 100 .mp3 files saved to my phone and more than half of those are assigned to individual entires (I pick a song that reminds me of that person). This is how I did it:
1) Load individual files via BB Desktop Manager into the RINGTONES folder on the SD card. When you plug your Pearl into the comp via the USB, it might ask you if you want to diable Mass Media Storage. Choose NO.
2) Go into the ADDRESS BOOK (not the CALL LOG) and find the individual you'd like to have a custom ring tone.
3) Click on the MENU button and scroll down to EDIT.
4)When you are in the EDIT ADDRESS window, click the trackball once and select ADD CUSTOM PHONE TUNE.
5) It will automatically bring you down to CUSTOM PHONE TUNE and click on the default ringer.
6) A new Menu will appear with the Ringers you have installed on it as well as the default tones that are available. If you do not see your ringtones, scroll up to BROWSE and open your Media Card file and then select the ringtone you want.
7) SAVE the changes and you're set.
I have not had any trouble setting up any of these ringtones and they all work properly.
Some quirky stuff:
- I changed my profile settings so that when it is on vibrate and tone, it will vibrate only ONCE before the ringtone starts. I believe it defaults at 3 and that was very annoying.
- Some of my ringers are a bit longer (like the Bee Gee's How Deep is Your Love =P) so if I have my SMS msgs set to a longer ringtone, even after I've read the message, it will continue to play until the file is done. It doesn't stop once I've read it! VERY annoying.

I was having the same problem Harleerider was but it just seemed to go away. I don't remember if I reset my BB or not but the custom ringtone wasn't playing and then it just started working.

I don't think so. I have an expanded remix of a Pet Shop Boys song and it's about 4.07 mb.

I believe there IS a limit if you do not have a microSD expansion card. Some other threads have mentioned a limit (2.86MB rings a bell) but no limit with an expansion card.

I tried everything that could be done without changing the OS or pulling the battery.
Finally I left things the way I wanted them, tested a few more times to make sure it was still not working, and then pulled the battery. Now it works fine. And it is accepting other changes properly.
I haven't put a MicroSD card in the phone yet (still waiting on it to arrive in the mail). So the mp3s that I'm using are stored in the device memory. They are small though as they're just ringtone loops, not full songs.
Something else I noticed while the phone wouldn't play ringtones properly was that it was running really slowly. After the battery pull it's back to normal speed as well. Unfortunately I haven't tested out custom pictures yet so I can't report anything there.

thanks, this helped me.
sounds basic, but I was stuck on having to give the exception a name in addition to picking a name. (might be nice if its name defaulted to the name you choose...)

Cusromized Ringtones Problems -
11-30-2007, 05:13 PM
I am having the same exact problem as the other member who wrote to say that, despite setting customized "notification" ringtones, the ring always goes to the default. In my case, no matter how I customize my contacts, the ring is the same as whatever I have set for the first contact. I was thinking that I must have missed some part of doing this correctly but I have followed the instructions to a "t". It was reassuring (somewhat) to read that others have had the same problem. I tried removing the battery and replacing it. I tried re-saving the custom settings - all to no avail. Any suggestions? Thanks

Alright so i just got my BB Pearl for my Sweet 16 and I was having the same problem. Now, I've made it so the custom ringtones work for calls but is there anyway I can customize ringtones for texts? ... and do I have to have a SD card to do so?

So what happens if a contact is listed in a profile exception with an overriding ring tone AND they have a different tone associated with them set from the contact "add custom phone tune".
They remain listed in the group and as a custom exception all on their own.
Does smoke come out of the speaker when they call :-| Is it predictable which tune plays?
