Default Adding all themes - Please Help - 01-19-2007, 12:06 AM

I know that someone is going to be upset that I am asking this question. But I have spent the last 4 hours trying to figure out how to correctly add the package of themes from the sticky:
BlackBerry.alx - Edited Files for Packaged Theme Installation (4.1 & 4.2 ONLY)

I am pretty good with computers. And have been using PDA's for over a decade. But that sticky says not to try what it says unless you really know what your doing.

Well I am new to the Blackberry Pearl, but I want to put the other themes on it, as I heard some other ones can seperate the messages from the emails, and I need this functionality.

Can someone please point out to me what I am supposed to do with the files or at least point me to a thread that really outlines it.

Let me tell you what it is I think I have to do, and you can tell me if I am right or not.

(Blackberry Pearl 8100, Rogers Canada)

1. Backup my Pearl
2. Download 8100M_PBr4.2.0_rel61_PL2.2.0.32_A4.2.0.51_Rogers.e xe direct from the link that leads to xxx.blackberry.xxx\ . . .
3. run 8100M_PBr4.2.0_rel61_PL2.2.0.32_A4.2.0.51_Rogers.e xe on my desktop computer.
4. Delete Vendor.xml file from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
5. Rename Blackberry.alx from Installation Path: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8100-v4.2.0.51_P2.2.0.32 to anything else. (Can I just put this file somewhere else for safe keeping?)
6. Download 8100-Rogers-4.1.0.61 (blackberry.alx) from the link in the FAQ as well, and place the file into C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8100-v4.2.0.51_P2.2.0.32
7. Open desktop software and upgrade/update blackberry.

  • Should step 7 automatically run when I plug in the blackberry, if it was not connected.
  • Do I shutdown the desktop software before starting this?
  • Should my blackberry be connected while performing steps 1-6?

If this is correct what do I do with the other file that was downloaded in the 8100-Rogers-4.1.0.61 (blackberry.alx) package, that being Platform.alx?

I do not think this is too difficult to do, I just do not want to screw up and could not find a step by step anywhere that outlines this for beginners.

Thanks,
Allan

You got it! Yes you can do whatever you want with the other .alx. That way you have it if you want to revert back. Don't plug in your BB until you are ready to start Desktop Manager. If it doesn't prompt for an upgrade, go to Application Loader. You should see that "core applications" need updated. Finish out the installation. It will reboot aftward and you'll be good to go.

It worked. I am now an expert

I do have one question though. I assume it uses more memory to have all those themes. How much more, because I noticed earlier that my pearl was running low on memory about 1.5MB. (I had in installed YahooToGo) Anyway, I uninstalled it and it recovered like 10MB, total now 11.5MB.

I did not notice how much I had before I ran this update to put the other themes on, but now I only have 8.7MB. Is it possible that the other themes took up the 3MB.

Thanks,
Allan

yes, themes take quite a bit of memory. Pictures take a lot of memory too. I recommend getting a card to save your pictures to.

My Blackberry Pearl 8100 is vodafone Hong KOng. I had followed these steps but still not working. I downloaded the modified BlackBerry.alx(not in Edited Files for Packaged Theme Installation (4.1 & 4.2 ONLY because there is not the file of vodafone). what shall I do next?
