you'll always take a short outage to improve long term reliability. I have a feeling that with the popularity of blackberrys growing exponentially, RIM is making sure they keep up. Good move.

NO, not another update. and it couldn't have come at a worst time, 3:00am-7:00am AST, what am I to do for 20 minutes during the outage.

Oh wait, never mind, I'll be sleeping during that time. YES a time when I won't have to work during an update on the RIM rely, so it's not all that bad.

This doesn't even affect me, because I'm in the UK, but when they say messages, they mean emails, right? I presume SMS messages go straight through the mobile provider... I never really understand which data goes through BIS and which goes through WAP (or regular internet?!) channels.

Email and PIN messages go through RIM while SMSs don't. So when there's a RIM outage like this, calls and SMS remain unaffected. Services that use your carrier's APN also aren't affected.

Anyone know if this impacted the ability to connect to the internet? I'm travelling (on the East coast at present) and up until today I've had no problem with connectivity. This morning it took forever to boot from GSM to edge to EDGE. While I'm getting email (albeit delayed) I'm still unable to connect to the internet.

Wirelessly posted (8310; The Juggernaut)

The actual downtime was only about 20 minutes, ending by 6am Eastern.
I would pull your battery and reboot if all else fails.

Done that several times to no avail.

I'll see later if it is just localized to the cell tower in Brooklyn. My guess is that it is, since I've not had any issues prior to this morning.

Probably localized, because unless the date is wrong, the outage is tomorrow unless I can't read (or at least it's tomorrow in Central time).

HELP! Ever since the update my 8830 won't power on/initialize!! Red LED comes on for a few seconds (not blinking) and then goes off ... then it repeats. Happens on both USB connection to laptop and on charger. So thinking I might have a corrupt OS (that's before I read about the update) I tried downloading VZ OS update - of course it won't initialize so that ain't working. WHAT NOW!!!!! ARGHHHH....

The update should not have affected your device as in my understanding it was for the networks/system. I would try updating to the latest OS posted here.
