I use an 8700G on T Mobile. I'm in Houston, Tx. I received messages all day as well as used the internet features. About 18:00 (6:00 PM) it went from EDGE to GSM & stayed that way until approx 20:00 (8:00 PM) I was downtown on the 26th floor as usual. EDGE came back after leaving the building. Any news of a data outage that fits?
