Default Fairly new and could use help - 05-27-2008, 09:34 PM

Hi,
I am a fairly new bb user and have a couple of questions that I could use a lot of help with.

1-i have an 8703e bb with blackberry serice throught sprint. My previous phone had a software crash and i lost alot of emails and contact info. Is there any hope of bb back ups that can be restored or am i screwed.

2- my profession has me on a couple of various networks that I have to log onto and get my emails forwarded to my bb, therefore security questions are very serious.

3- how typical is security breaches ie hacking possible and if so what can i do to Track, or combat this?

Any help and info or websites ,software that you can forward me to would be greatly appreciated.

i do business with large banks and entertainment companies and have to be very careful with the info that I have. Thanks again.

I look forward to posting here again.

Hi Bill E and welcome to BBF. Regarding your questions:

1 - did you have backups from the previous phone? If it was a Blackberry and you have a good backup, there is the possibility of restoring the data. Others here will probably have better info for you.

Afaik Blackberry is the most secure mobile device. It is not vulnerable to viruses, trojans, exploits, etc. There are no known viruses or malware for the BB. There is a spyware program called Flexispy, but it can't be installed without user action.

Take a look at the BB FAQ. It has a lot of important info.

Wirelessly posted (my new touch button BB)

There have been no reported instances of a blackberry or its services having ever been hacked

Of course i didn't back up on my computer itself but was wondering if I have the service through sprint and pay 40$ per month for BB service by any miracle would they have a bu on the server even of any calls or emails that i have sent or received. I know that I am reaching for straws yet thats all I have.
My BB crashed as I was trying to update the os.
My bad and i know but keeping hope alive.

Thanks again.

Did you buy this 8703e Blackberry used? If so, do you know the person you bought it from? I don't think Flexispy is widely known and it seems highly unlikely it would have been installed on your phone. I would think your carrier might be able to tell if there have been unusual data transmissions on your account. You could also wipe the phone and reload the OS.

As far as restoring your data, I'd call Sprint and ask what they can do.

If you bought the phone new, then I wouldn't worry about anything unwanted being installed on it. I'm sorry I don't have any other suggestions about restoring your data. If you're concerned about security, you should password protect the device. If you plan to store sensitive data like account numbers and logins, you can get a program to encrypt the information, something like Ascendo Data Vault. You can look at Handango.com for other security related apps.

Microsoft Office cannot be installed on a Blackberry. Using the Desktop Manager you can sync your calendar, address book, etc. with Outlook on your PC. I think if you take the time to read the FAQ link I posted earler, and read the help section on your Blackberry, it will help you a lot.
