Question I am SO CONFUSED! - 06-29-2008, 11:32 PM

Hi All -

I am a new user to the Blackberry. I went from having a cruddy phone to getting a blackberry (8820 - AT&T) from my work , and now I have a Curve (8830 - Verizon) for personal use.

I'm figuring out a few things on my own. I downloaded the GMAIL application because I hated getting personal email in w/corporate email on my 8820.

I found mobango.com and have downloaded some ringtones. I also have uploaded some pictures of ds and dh for a warm and fuzzy background.

BUT - I have no idea what BIS is, or BES. I have no idea how to use that Blackberry messenger. I also can't figure out how to remove that dreadful "Sent from my Blackberry" message that is appended to all corporate emails. I hate that thing.

I'm looking forward to learning how my new devices work, and am SO thrilled to have found this forum.

I'm poking around, of course, but if anyone wants to help a newbie out with some specific links, or even a lil tutorial (hint hint) I'd be so grateful!

Thanks Y'all!

mk

Connect BB to computer using desktop manager you can edit your signature there. I found some good themes and tones at myxer.com. Blacberry messenger uses your pin # kinda like a screenname..hope this helps some! Welcome to BBF and have fun!

I'll try the desktop manager to edit the signature. I don't remember seeing it though - quite frustrating as the Desktop Manager for the 8820 is different than the one for the Curve. I expected them to be the same - or at least less different. Figures, as one is Verizon and the other is AT&T...

I did figure out the messenger. I sent myself a message and it came through! Thanks!

One more general question, if I may. How does the blackberry know to lock itself when I put it in the holster? I mean, I know there is a setting (which I have set) but how does the blackberry's brain recognize being holstered to lock itself? Is it the magnet? Is it the scrolling? (Just wondering. That is soooo cool!)

Thanks!

Okay - one more question. styxgroupi, you rock!

So I downloaded some ringtones. I have edited the name in the blackberry manager, but they are showing up in the blackberry as different names. Why is that?

The manual shows I should be able to click MENU and select RENAME to rename the files, but there is no "rename" listed.

what gives? Any suggestions?

Desktop Manager for the Curve (83xx) is the exact same as for the 88xx, the 87xx ad the 81xx. There are different versions with 4.2 Service Pack 2, 4.3 and just released 4.5 Desktop Manager.

Edit your signature (on BES) right on the BB device itself in Messages > Options. For a BIS personal account, sign into your BIS account at your carrier website.

You both rock! I will give both suggestions a try. I figured out how to work the mobile forum. Awesome!

I'll check the version numbers. I may have different desktop managers like you said. I am on 4.3 on the Curve. Not sure about the 8820. They are VERY different tho-- I figured it was due to the differing service providers.

Thanks yall!

Hi - what is BIS?

Trying to change the song titles through the Blackberry Manager did not work. Nor did it work when I tried to change the name on the Blackberry (there is no RENAME option).

Interstingly, when I am in the address book, all of the songs appear with the edited song titles - the deletions have occurred, etc. It's only when I'm looking in the media option on the device that the oddities occur.

I'll poke around some today on the forums to see what I can find. I'll also check the versions today.

Thx,

mk
